This here is Kent Pekel, and he is super independent of the school district in Minnesota where my youngest sister works. He cancelled schools today in his area because he was expecting the worst…as were the rest of the meteorologist in the world.
Everyone is at least somewhat aware that the Midwest, and the majority of America, is going to be going through some crazy weather patterns. It is -7.0 degrees in Rochester, MN, and there supposed to be monstrous snow storms in incredulous winds throughout the day today.
Like, you get why Mr. Kent Pekel cancelled school and ruined parents days and extended the school years for the youth.
Here is the thing thing…it turned out to be a beautiful day in my sister’s area of Minnesota. If you ignore the negative temperatures, it looks like a picturesque day.
Does this superintendent cower in the shadows of his wrong decision? Does he block out the haters and turn them away?
No. Mr. Kent Pekel embraced his first name and put on his cape and braced all the horrendous conditions that Minnesota bore. He went out there, in broad beautiful daylight, and owned up to his mistakes. In the funniest and best way possible.
I remember when I worked for the school district in high school doing audio for board of education meetings. Our superintendent was nowhere as cool as this. He was s stodgy old man who let baseball coaches keep their jobs when they got drunk on the job as passed out on hotel couches.
In an age where kids don’t’ get the thrill of seeing their school day cancelled on the bottom line of local news, we need something to spice things up. A phone call at 5:00 AM is barely enough, and we know that a text is not worth holding your breath for at all.
Videos like this, completely genuine and genuinely hilarious, make a “wasted” a bit more worthwhile and bearable.
Turns out a nerdy guy who loves education can still be good at social media. I will say that this is on Twitter so his students may never see it, but here is to hoping that the next time he walks the halls of one of his hallowed schools, he will get the silent head nod of approval.
