I am in the Oppenheimer (2023) hive. Between Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer at the theater, I am going to be punching my ticket for Christopher Nolan’s big brained character study.
A question I keep asking myself is how Nolan is going to be science interesting. I am not worried about the characters who are doing the scientific things, but rather the physical reactions that take place. The Atomic Bomb is a feat of scientific discovery, all be it a very deadly one. Based off the first full length trailer we saw, and the opening moments of this second trailer, Nolan is not going to shy away from getting under the microscope and showing us what exactly is happening.
After the opening adrenaline rush of this trailer, we here the line “we are in a race against the Nazis.” Immediately this trailer is putting the concept of time at the forefront. It is making this story a competition in a way; America vs. Germany. At this time of history, Good vs. Evil. We see J. Robert Oppenheimer manically explaining that he knows the stakes, and he is one of the few who can comprehend what it truly means.
This second trailer gives us a lot more Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon), the man who is with Oppenheimer and building a team. Christopher Nolan, for all of his grand ideas, is painting very basic foundation with gorgeous coats of paint. We have a movie with that is a race against time, and there is a team that is needed to beat the most evil human force known to man, otherwise the world will never be the same (according to our main protagonist). All of this is set up in the first minute of the trailer.
You light the fuse, the unite a team under the leadership of a smart but eccentric leader at a secret site in the middle of nowhere. All you need is a big bang pay off. And that you will surely have.
I wont speak glowingly about everything in Oppenheimer. The line where Groves Jr. is telling a scientist “this is the most important thing to happen in the history of the world” is very earnest. It is of the time the 1940s when every movie character spoke with ferocity and ruthless conviction, but in the context of the quiet question-asking potential recruit and Oppenheimer itself, it seems incredibly out of place. Now putting context clues together, I think this has to come at a point when Groves is at his wits end trying to build something world changing with little to no long-term strategy.
“I can preform this miracle.”
j. Robert Oppenheimer
This line peaked my interest. It makes me think that we are going to get a god-complex coming from Oppenheimer. He is a man who likes to improvise and create something from nothing, just as the book of Geneisis would have you believe God did. This would be a bit of perpendicular approach because Oppenheimer’s free-thinking Green Lantern imaginative intellect is creating something that will possible destroy the world. “What do you want from theory alone?” This is a man willing to place it all on the table.
The final portion of the Oppenheimer trailer takes it off the metaphorical table and cradles the creation of this bomb in the context of the war. The idea is that this bomb will end the war. It will endure peace mankind has never seen. Until someone builds a bigger bomb. It is painting a very real picture of the consequences that the creation and detonation of the A-Bomb will have on the world.
Kenneth Branagh’s character, who is not identified yet, tells Oppenheimer that he is the man who gave humanity the power to destroy themselves, and humanity is not prepared for having that choice. It is reminiscent of Prometheus giving fire to the humans and then being punished by Zeus after the fact. It is a bit of power they don’t know how to fully control, and now that it is in their hands and they have seen it, everyone who has the knowledge of it can no longer be manipulated.
The power of fire to the ancient Greeks made them less reliant on their belief of the Gods when it came to prosperity and productivity. What does giving the world the Atomic bomb do? Does it take away the barriers of our country that people got so comfortable with? Does it take power away from the greatest military powers because one bomb can change everything and make even a superior army negligible?
The side effect of letting something this powerful into the world is that your leverage is gone. Knowledge is power, specially when it is only you that knows.
The last color image we see in this trailer is Oppenheimer looking terrified. It is in all living color the consequences of him being a genius and orchestrating this bomb. The last black & white image we see is of a war room with Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.) talking about letting the president know what is about to happen.
In war times people can often look in black & white at certain actions. Good, bod. Did it help our cause or did it hurt it. It is often a binary thought process because it makes it a simpler thought process. But life is not that simple. Life is messy. Life can blow up in your face.
Oppenheimer arrives the theaters next summer, July 21st, 2023.
