For those who have seen John Wick: Chapter 4, you know that the ending of that movie was pretty damn definitive. It is a great period on Wick’s story. Speaking strictly for myself, I don’t need to see another movie with John Wick. This is the solid ending. John Wick: Chapter 4 is like The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) in that it is a great send off to a character that hits all the right emotional notes.
But. IF (and only if) there were to be a John Wick: Chapter 5, I have a few ideas. Just a couple. A handful. Five ideas for John Wick: Chapter 5.
John Wick was born Jardani Jovonovich in Padhorje, Byelorussian SSR. He was orphaned at a young age and was taken in by a friend of his father who was part of the Russian mob. This old friend of John’s father became a mentor and John went on to be trained as an assassin.
We see John meet up with his adopted extended family in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and he see him get reacquainted with some fellow extended family members in Chapter 4. What we never see is John Wick return home. We never see Wick go back to where it all started. Where he was raised as a child before he became an orphan and eventually the world’s most deadly killing machine.
Imagine John in in the show, grizzled with more of a beard. He is donning a parka that makes him look like a marshmallow, but you know that despite his fluffy exterior, he is still hard as ice on the inside. John’s trip to Russia could be on “business” or it could be personal. He may just want to settle down there after freeing himself. The world thinks he is dead, and he can go to a place that is cut off from news of the world, and influence of the high table.
It is one of the few countries and landscapes we don’t see Wick traverse throughout his four chapter story.
Credit to my fiancée on this one. She asked me one day in the kitchen; do we ever see John Wick fight on a boat? I wracked my brain, and no, I don’t believe that he ever does. We see Wick deal death with a car plenty of times. He expands his horizons to horses and motorcycles on occasions as well. But what about a speed boat? What about him stalking prey on a yacht? What about jet skis bouncing on the waves? The most memorable moment of underwater killing from the Wick movies is in the first one killing people in a spa or in Parabellum when the bullets get slowed underwater.
Get Iko Uwais in John Wick: Chapter 5. This man is the modern day kung-fu master on the screen, but he has not had a great movie in a very long time. Uwais broke through in The Raid: Redemption (2011) and continued it three years later with The Raid 2. After that, the major motion pictures he has been a part of have been very disappointing. Mile 22 (2018), Stuber (2019), Snake Eyes (2021) and Fistful Of Vengeance (2022) are all not great.
Let’s get Uwais in an action movie that will be a success. With four fantastic movies under its belt, I have zero reason to doubt that five wouldn’t be fantastic. Let this be a rebirth for Uwais and let him grow into the potential action star that he can be.
Uwais can do all of the physical stunts. His most dangerous weapons are his hands. He is best in movies where he doesn’t have to talk a lot. How many lines does he say in The Raid or The Raid 2? It can’t be a lot. He is a man that can act and convey emotion through violence. He expresses fatigue yet determination constantly when he traverses through hallways or prisons.
There are plenty of action stars who could make their way in the John Wick universe, but many have a face that is too recognizable. Sorry Jason Statham, you are too big in action movies to be a secondary character to the movie’s vibe and atmosphere. Uwais is a tier below, just obscure enough where a movie like John Wick: Chapter 5 would introduce him to a whole new audience.
Think Batman Beyond vibes. Think Vesemir and Geralt vibes. Think Splinter and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Imagine John Wick is dead to the world, forgotten. He is living in Russia somewhere happy, alone, and in peace. Suddenly the world that he has been out of for so long has been thrust back upon in, not by a malevolent assassin looking to even a score, but rather a young hitman who is in need of help. This young killer has a connection to Mr. Wick, somewhere deep in the past. Perhaps it is the child of the Bowery King or Charon that took the information their father had and tracked Wick down because he is the only beacon of hope.
If there is to be a John Wick: Chapter 5, let there be time passed. Let it breath. Let Wick become old enough where he can’t kick ass anymore. He still has the mental wherewithal, but physically he can’t keep up. The bullets, the bruising and the broken body Wick fought with has finally broken down. Perhaps he is living with the cane that Caine had in John Wick: Chapter 4, since presumably Caine died at the hands of Shimazu Akira.
Think about this. The Wick universe pays a ton of homage to the samurai way of respect. Every movie like that has a mentor and a pupil. It is part of the mystique of the kung-fu and Asian action drama that Wick hasn’t touched. Let Wick sit on a stool and dispense wisdom with a weary yet fiery look in his eye. Let him educate the youth and show them the way. You do not need Wick to absolutely kick-ass on a physical level. Let’s see what he has mentally and how he can use that to his advantage in a world that has passed him by.
Call the movie John Wick: Chapter Five – Anastasis.
“Anastasis” means resurrection in Latin. Follow the lead that Parabellum shoveled out. Who knew that Parabellum meant “Prepare For War” before Chapter 3 came out? No one, the answer is no one.
John Wick is dead to the world and he literally needs to rise again in order to bump up against the new version of The High Table. The man will not die, and even when the bad guys think he has been finally vanquished, he comes back. Anastasis can work literally as Wick sticking his hand out of the dirt, but also the idea that Wicks ethos and skills are being reborn. The aura of Wick is back to haunt those that most wanted him dead.

Just a heads up to anyone reading this, there’s going to be less words in this fantasy baseball recap because I’m doing it speech to text and trying to get Google to understand professional baseball players names without me having to go in and retype them all in is going to be a big pain…
