We have a new A24 horror movie. It is time to get board the hype train and stir up the coal because this locomotive is heading straight toward a bloody ending.
X takes place in secluded Texas on a random ranch owned by an elderly couple. A film crew is planning on shooting a pornographic film on the premises, but their enthusiasm is crimped once the moon rises and the darkness falls. The elderly couple that is lending their guest house to the group of young adults become fixated with their guests, and their obsession turns bloody violent.
A couple things about this X trailer really stick out. For one, it has the grimy color and ethos of Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof (2007) and the isolated horror of Straw Dogs (1971). Also, X seems very meta for an A24 movie. There are specific lines like “You can’t just change the story midway through” and “I’d say one god damn fucked up horror picture.” Anyone who has seen classic pornographic movies know they are super cheesy, like the “come on line” in this trailer, and it seems like Ti West is embracing that as the movies writer and director.
I have seen three Ti West movies, all of them very creepy is not very scary. West directed a vignette in V/H/S (2012), and that was after The Innkeepers (2011) and The House Of The Devil (2009). All three of those movies have a distinct vibe, and as I am typing now, the color graining and neutralizing in X is similar to the low quality type of style that The House Of The Devil was. It should also be said that in the 2009 horror movie that stars Greta Gerwig, the villains ended up being an older couple with a very reclusive old woman.
X has a very small cast, only seven people credited. Jenna Ortega is becoming a horror movie staple quickly; she is in The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020) and was just part of the blockbuster horror Scream (2022). Mia Goth is not a stranger to strange horror having been a part of Suspiria (2018). Brittany Snow is returning to the fold with her first major movie since Pitch Perfect 3 (2017). She was in a TV show Almost Family and a poorly reviewed raunchy comedy movie Hooking Up (2020). I will admit, I would probably see it.
What is this movie Black Water Transit that is on Snow’s IMDB? We have a movie that involves murder, illegal fire arms trafficking and a classic cops vs. lawyers vs. criminals backdrop. The movie has no release date but it has Snow, Karl Urban, Lawrence Fishburne, Beverly D’Angelo, and Aisha Taylor. I don’t know anything about this except that it is based off of a Carsten Stroud novel…so color me intriqued.
Getting back to X, the bloody madness is going to be coming to theaters on March 18, 2022. My guess is that the grandma is a werewolf that comes out only at night. There will be a shot with the moonlight lighting a naked women having sex and then a shadow will creep over her while she is not realizing and there will be bloody carnage following.

Loved this draft idea from The Big Picture crew. I am not going to be able to do my normal redrafting because there is just enough movies to pick from, but I will have fun going through all of the different categories and determining what my dream lineup would be from the movies i have…
