The first full length Don’t Look Up trailer opens up with Leonardo DiCaprio begging to Jennifer Lawrence that their discovery of a giant meteor headed straight to destroy earth isn’t real. That is where this story begins.
The oval office seems REALLY laid back about this “Planet Killer.” The executive branch is led by President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep), and her chief of staff seems to be Jason Orlean (Jonah Hill). They brush off the disaster and now it is up to the two seemingly eccentric scientists to leak the information and spread the horrendous news across the world. Also, should note that Dr. Clayton “Teddy” Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan) appears to be on their side.
Don’t Look Up is another political satire from McKay, this time not focusing on a simple person like Vice (2018), rather one that jokes about what the government people are lazy about and what the news considers serious. From there it is chaos. Countless faces of famous actors and musicians are latched into this trailer. McKay appears to have the same pull as Wes Anderson when it comes to getting anyone to be in his movie, no matter how long the part.
This movie is chance for Lawrence to retake her place in the hierarchy. I had mentioned in my review of Last Night In Soho (2021) that Anya Taylor-Joy has taken her mantle as the young woman reaching the upper pedestal; Don’t Look Up is her chance to make that relaunch possible.
Also this is Leo’s first movie since Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood (2019), so just happy to have him back on the screen. He has a a movie coming out this year, next year and the year after. It is going to be awesome. Let’s get after it with some guaranteed entertaining movies.
Don’t Look Up airs on Netflix on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2021.
