It is maybe a little late in the season, but the summer vibe is still resonating for many right now. Speaking personally, I’m just chilling at a lake house and let me tell you…this summer isolation thing is amazing. So while catching these rays and avoiding responsibilities like a true kid being forced to eat some nasty veggies, I began to think about some movies that are most digestible during the summer time. So here it is. A list of 10 movies that surely no one will agree with, but this was me running through my list and what truly stuck out.

The Sandlot
Director: David Mickey Evans
Writers: David Mickey Evans, Robert Gunter
Staring: Mike Vitar, Patrick Renna, Tom Guiry
Release Date: April 7, 1993

I mean this is childhood innocence personified. Baseball is a summer game, and there may be nothing more American than the fireworks scene with Benny The Jet mashing a home run. Throwing this movie on means you’ll be quoting the best parts and wishing that you could be a kid again around your friends.

A League Of Their Own
Director: Penny Marshall
Writers:Kim Wilson, Kelly Candaele, Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel
Staring: Tom Hanks, Genna Davis, Lori Petty
Release Date: July 1, 1992

Now the adult version of a baseball movie. “THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!!”

This movie came out in the heat of summer in 1992 and still has a wonderful blend of drama and comedy.

Call Me By Your Name
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Writers: James Ivory, Andre Aciman
Cast: Armie Hammer, Timothee Chalamet
Release Date: January 19, 2018

The best summer romance movie I have seen in recent years. Just so subtle, yet so powerful. Also the BEAUTIFUL green pastures and settings that are shown. The bike rides and the paths Oliver and Elio take…Call Me By Your Name is both heart wrenching and heart warming.

Rear Window
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Writers: John Michael Hayes, Cornell Woolrich
Cast: James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey
Release Date: September 1954

The most recent addition to my list, Rear Window has sweltering HEAT throughout and that isn’t just regarding the weather. There is anxiety and drama dripping from each from Hitchcock stitches together. It also goes without saying that the idea of being trapped inside a room during the most freeing time of year has a more profound affect.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Director: Tobe Hooper
Writers: Kim Henkel, Tobe Hooper
Cast: Marilyn Burns, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain
Release Date: October 11, 1974

Not the happiest of summer movies…but again the idea of unbearable heat coupled with unimaginable terror has its place. This is like being at a lake house by the fire sweating while eating a s’more, but then you hear something in the woods behind you. There is that tinge of uneasiness and you just hope it isn’t a cannibalistic maniac behind you.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Director: Ol Parker
Writers: Richard Curtin, Ol Parker, Catherine Johnson, Judy Craymer, ABBA
Staring: Amanda Seyfried, Lily James
Release Date: July 20, 2018

Yea this is my pick, deal with it!

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a summer wedding movie with awesome songs that you can sing along to. It has surprise guest spots and huge set pieces. Multiple different settings and sailing to boot. Yea it is a weird one, but throw my some Trulys and put on an ABBA soundtrack if you got it.

Top Gun
Director: Tony Scott
Writers: Jim Cash, Jack Epps Jr. Ehud Yonay, Warren Skaaren
Staring: Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer
Release Date: July 20, 2018

The sound track. The beach volleyball scene. The singing in the bar. The roar of the engines. Top Gun has a little bit of everything.

If you give me “Danger Zone” with “Take My Breath Away” it is gonna be a win.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Director: Steven Spielberg
Writers: Lawrence Kasdan, George Lucas, Philip Kaufman
Staring: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman
Release Date: June 12, 1981

Maybe the best pure adventure movie of all-time? This may be a weird one, but I have the visage of Indy sweating with his hat protecting him from the sun on numerous occasions. The constant changing of settings…almost all of them warm…is just like travelling. Just if you want to have a good-hearted fun this is it.

Director: Steven Spielberg

I mean…it’s iconic and was the first movie on this list. It is a staple in every which way. Jaws is up there with Halloween for me in terms of movies that I rewatch around the same time every year.
