Here it is. Dune: Part Two. The first official trailer. I have thoughts. Now to jot them all down.
This trailer starts out with Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya) having what is a classic high school romance type of conversation. Paul is telling Chani about his homeland of Caladan, which is very different than Arrakis. Water? That is a foreign concept to Chani.
Princess Irulan Corrino (Florence Pugh) is voicing over a large of this trailer, which tracks well from Frank Herbert’s book. Also if you go back and watch David Lynch’s Dune (1984), Princess Irulan opens up the movie and sets the stage for the story to come. In Denis Villeneuve’s version, the Princess is noting how Arrakis has many untold stories. Irulan is no joke, she knows that something is off. She is on Arrakis at the behest of Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken), and she has a right to worry.
Paul Atreides is alive. He is becoming the Muad’Dib. He is becoming the leader of the Fremen.
At the 30 second mark we see (what I presume) are the Sardukar burning bodies, and any remnants of House Atreides. We see a portrait of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Issac) turned to embers. Emperor Shaddam IV wants to erase any memory of Atreides.
Nice bit of editing. Visual cue to think about Leto, then BAM to his mistress Lady Jessica Atreides (Rebecca Ferguson). She is noting to Paul that his father didn’t like the idea of revenge. This is followed by text flowing “fury will rise.” One could assume this is talking about Paul’s desire to avenge his father, but the fury can ride from many other places as well. The Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) has a right to be pissed that his plan was foiled. His muscle Rabban (Bautista) will share in his anger. Emperor Shaddam probably isn’t pleased at the lack of spice flow, and Gunrey Halleck (Josh Brolin) probably isn’y very happy he was left for dead.
Oh, and what a look we have here. Austin Butler, coming in flaming grey with a bald head and a chiseled chin as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. For those that do not know, Feyd-Rautha is the younger nephew of the Baron, and he is seen as the heir to this thrown. Unlike his brother, who is a somewhat simple thinking brute, Feyd is a cunning, slippery warrior. The interesting thing tid-bit is that Feyd was being groomed for big things by the Bene Gesserit. You remember the hooded clothing in black witches from the first movie?
These ladies did everything they could to pin this beast of a man with a suitable young women. But to the Bene Gesserit’s dismay, Lady Jessica gave birth to a boy. Now Paul and Feyd are two different sides of fate belonging to feuding houses. Lots, lots, lots going on there.
There are a series of quick moments. That show various characters, but most notably Feyd screaming just before Lady Jessica wakes up. It is impossible not to notice two things. First, how well this trailer is edited. Secondly, that we are going to get Feyd in black in white in the arena and good lord I am getting aroused at the thought of those visuals just be thinking bout it.
The second half of the trailer begins with an expansion upon the teaser trailer we got on Wednesday.
It is Paul that put down the thumper. We are going to see Paul ride the sand worm. We are going to see the Fremem start to believe. You can see the happiness on Chani’s face, and compare that with the awe of Stilgar. The legend of the Muad’Dib is growing. His power among the people is shown in an epic shot of Paul looking over an army of Fremen getting set to take back their world. I for one am ready. Are you?
And the trailer ends with a quote the book lovers will fawn over and viewers will undeniably find meeting.
[The mystery of life isn’t a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. A process that cannot be understood by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it.]
May thy knife chip and shatter.”
Dune: Part Two will take my soul away from me in the movie theaters when it arrives on November 2.
For those curious, these were the thoughts I was just able to type out while I was watching the movie for the first time.
