Here’s the thing. I am a sucker for a fantasy adventure story. Also, I am a sucker for a classic rock song being the bed of your movie trailer.

So good job Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), you have my attention, but can you gain my curiosity?

The story of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is not officially released, but based off the trailer, it is familiar story that we can all understand. A rag-tag group of quasi bad guys take something they shouldn’t have, anger some important people, try to make amends for their behavior.

That my friends, is what we call a classic D&D campaign. We like the simplicity thus far.

What is going to make Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves work or not is its cast of characters. You need to have memorable people who fit into the tropes they are caged into.

When you look at the cast and the characters they are playing, it is easy to get a glint of optimism.

We have Chris Pine playing The Bard. Will all the Chris Pine heads please stand up? He was in All The Old Knives (2022) which I enjoyed, and this year he has the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling (2022). He is a better actor that Chris Pratt, so if the D&D story is going to be like a marvel-esq adventure movie featuring a gang of rag-tag personalities…

I won’t lie, seeing in the IMDB digging that this Dungeons & Dragons movie is going to have the same vibes as Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014) makes me a little queasy. Are we going to end Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with a dance battle? I really hope not. My devil’s advocate argument is that Chris Pine as the lead is better than Pratt, so let’s go D&D.

The cast includes Michelle Rodriguez as the Barbarian, Regé-Jean Page as the Paladin, Justice Smith as the Sorcerer, Sophia Lillis as the Druid, Hugh Grant as the Rogue and Chloe Coleman as an unnamed character.

Michelle Rodriguez kicks ass, so making her the Barbarian makes sense. Regé-Jean Page is on the rise since he burst onto the scene in Bridgerton. He was just in The Gray Man (2022) as a truly abhorrent asshole, and that looks to be a money bag as Netflix just announced a sequel and a spin-off. Lillis is probably most recognized by her performance of Beverly Marsh in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019) so excited to see her alongside Coleman who was a surprise joy My Spy (2020). Yea, I said it.

Oh, and Hugh Grant is in this. Charm automatically ramped up an extra notch.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was one of many trailers released at Comic Con 2022. Apologies to the Teen Wolf fans, but I don’t have an interest in Teen Wolf: The Movie. I am happy for you whenever that movie eventually comes out. I do not have a lot of excitement for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). I didn’t love the original Black Panther (2018), but I can say that the trailer itself was pretty darn good. The SHAZAM! Fury Of The Gods (2022) trailer is self depreciating in terms of comparing it to other superhero movies, but it will be a wait for streaming viewing for me. The shocking reveal of John Wick: Chapter Four (2023) captured my attention, and I have already written about that.

It is a movie information dump when Comic Con happens, so to all those catching up like me, all the power to you.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters on March 3, 2023.
