“Three women fight to break the cycle one life at a time.”

Directors: Elaine McMillion, Sheldon
Release Date: September 12, 2017

This one is going to be short and sweet. We have a wedding to celebrate today! Shout out Rudy and Katie.

Heroin(e) (2017) is a Netflix original short documentary that follows the story of Jan Rader, Patricia Keller and Necia Freeman trying to fight the heroin epidemic that is plaguing Huntington, WV. It is not a happy documentary, but Heroin(e) is impactful and necessary.

Director Elaine McMillion Sheldon earned Peabody and Emmy award recognition before being nominated for an Oscar in 2018. She follows the the avenues that which people try and help those affected by drugs. We follow an activist on the street trying to help people before anything happens. We follow a fire chief who is the first response for when something goes wrong. We follow a judge who is trying to help those deal with their consequences.

Also, just a rather odd convenience here. I watched Heroin(e) while reading John Grisham’s Gray Mountain. Incredibly strong and similar vibes with the two stories; both taking place in West Virginia, both involving a mining towns that have an affliction for heart break and addiction. The book is good, but this documentary is great.
