Well, here it is. This is really happening. Obi-Wan Kenobi, the much coveted limited series, is coming to life.
Let’s start off with the first first 30 seconds of this teaser trailer. What a phenomenal job of building a crescendo. The teaser is easing us in, reminding us of what has happened and where in the world of Star Wars we are settled in. Courtesy of Ewan McGregor’s sultry voiceover, fans reminded that good guys fought, but they lost. When we last saw McGregor’s version of Kenobi, the Empire was running rampant over the galaxy with a new Sith Lord casting a heavy shadow.
This reminds me of Luke Skywalker in “The Last Jedi “(2017) looking over the water. Also, what is that little thing to Kenobi’s right?
At the end of this opening 30 seconds, we hear Kenobi say “Stay hidden.” Who is he speaking to? The screen is black. Is he talking to young Luke who we saw him watching over from afar? Is he talking to himself? Is he talking to another Jedi who survived order 66? These are things that we need to know! Well, things that we want to know right now.
Young Luke doing what we all do and wishing we can fly.
The remainder of the Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer centers mainly on the bad guys. And it is done, really, really well.
“The key to hunting Jedi is patience.”
So it would appear that Obi-Wan is not only watching over Luke, but he is also on the run. He is in hiding, not only from the memories of failure that are haunting him, but also from Star Wars Rebels‘ Grand Inquisitor, who is making his jump from the animated series to live action. I guess now would be the time to finally watch all of Star Wars Rebels.
The Grand Inquisitornot messing around
These inquisitors were instituted after Order 66 to track down and kill any of the Jedi that slipped through the tracks. Kenobi is a big boy in the world of the Jedi, so there may be more than just a quick combing through to find out where he is hiding.
Rubert Friend plays the Grand Inquisitor and he will have help from what looks like an inquisitor apprentice of sorts? She is not shy about wielding her lightsaber and flaunting hung people in the streets for all to see…including Owen Lars. Joel Edgerton is returning to play Uncle Owen, and he isn’t the only familiar face.
Uncle Owen…not looking like the happiest guy in the world
According to IMDB, Hayden Christensen is set to appear in all six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi. This comes as a bit of a shocker to me. We hear the looming breathing of Darth Vader as the trailer wraps, teasing everyone everyone for what they all want to happen. We will get a Kenobi and Vader lightsaber fight. It seems inevitable. There are countless hints that the pair met before their fateful battle on the Death Star, and that long awaited skirmish is going to make every single Star Wars fan aroused when it happens during this series.
So here are my takeaways from this trailer. Obi-Wan Kenobi is down bad and he is hiding. I love how this trailer highlighted the malevolence of the Empire and how they are looming over the galaxy. This fits the vibe that was The Revenge Of The Sith (2005), and I am happy to have it continue here.
One question that I am very interested in is who is the person wielding the handgun in the ally facing off against an inquisitor? It takes stones to do so. It has peaked my curiosity.
Who is this person of mystery?
Can we also talk about how the trailer ends with text saying “Hope Survives.” Kenobi is the beacon of hope, and if you remember, he is the only hope for Princess Leia in A New Hope (1977). It is an obvious motif, but it fits with the character, and it fits with the vibe of the trailer that someone needs to light the beacon.
Hope is rekindled in the galaxy when Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
