I don’t have a tone to say about this trailer except for INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS!!!
The Northman has a very basic revenge plot based in an incredibly violent environment with a cast fit for Oscar fodder. The Northman is directed by Roger Eggers, who debuted with The Witch (2015) and reached a mass audience with The Lighthouse (2019). The Northman is what I live and die for. it is a basic plot injected with unique filmmaking, a sincere sense of atmosphere and the potential for phenomenal acting. The Northman can not get here soon enough.
Ethan Hawke plays King Horwendil, father of Amelth, who is played by (for the majority of the film at an age of maturity) by Alexander Skarsgård. Horwendil is married to Queen Gudrun, who is played by Nicole Kidman. Also in their court is a character by the name of Heimir The Fool, who is played by Willem Dafoe. It looks like Dafoe gets to act out of his mind again under the direction of Eggers, just like The Lighthouse.
The main catalyst for the plot is when King Horwendil is killed by his brother Fjölnir (Claes Bang), his brother. Amelth sees the murder and vows vengeance. After the young child version of Amelth escapes that island, he returns older, jacked, and filled with rage.
The Northman will tap into magic with mages and sorceresses. It will tap into deep and bloody violence that is seemingly is going to be scorched with very little morality.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s character appears to be one of these magically gifted souls and she looks to team up with Amleth on his path to justice. She notes how Amleth has the strength to break bones abut she has the ability to break minds.
The one aspect of this trailer that really sticks out is the brief glimpse of a women in red screaming at the top of her lungs. That is the only semblance of color in the trailer. There will be read blood flowing throughout the entire movie but who is this mystery character with the highlighted pizzaz?
The Northman is going to be brutal. It reminds me of a fucked up version of The Lion King (1994) combined with brutality of Apocalypto (2006) and a dark sense of direction like any of Eggers previous work or David Finch’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011).
This movie brings Dafoe back in under Eggers (The Lighthouse), as well as Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson and Kate Dicket from The Witch.
I cannot wait for The Northman. It is being released into theaters on April 22, 2022.

This is the shit I love. Chapter 18 of The Mandalorian is fantastic television and excellent Star Wars. Plenty of surprises, a bit of exposition, cool visuals and unexplained expansion of lore and stakes; all of these things make The Mines Of Mandalore a great episode of television. From the start of the episode we…
