“A card shark encounters an angry young man who’s seeking revenge against a military colonel.“
Director: Paul Schrader
Writer: Paul Schrader
Staring: Willem Dafoe, Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan, Tiffany Haddish
Release Date: September 10, 2021
The Card Counter has Isaac being all cool and collective, Dafoe going all crazy, Sheridan whining charismatically and Haddish breaking her mold and taking a serious part. The Card Counter reminds me a lot about if A Most Violent Year (2014) with performances carrying the story and movie.
Isaac has had a lot more success in his more serious roles than his blockbusters. A Most Violent Year, Ex Machina (2014) and Annihilation (2018) are all better than any of the latest Star Wars trilogy movies or any of the X-men movies.
Writer and director Paul Schrader doesn’t overwhelm himself with projects. He takes his time and has a foundation of success with some of his first movies being Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980). The only other movie I know i have seen of the 27 Schrader has written is First Reformed (2017), which shines with its screenplay and performances.
I am all in for The Card Counter.
The Card Counter is set to release in theaters September 10, 2021.
