I’m not sure who in entertainment decided that it was time to release all the new trailers for all the new shows and movies all at once, but I am not that upset about it.

We got Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), The Fall Guy (2024), Monkey Man (2024), Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice (2024), In a Violent Nature (2024), two House Of The Dragons previews, and this new  Alien: Romulus (2024) preview within a week of each other.

It is a delight to try and keep up with it.

I am a fan of the Alien franchise. I am a fan of Xenomorphs and all the films that they appear in. The franchise has had ups and downs, and those peaks and valleys have steep inclines. Ridley Scott has been the mastermind of the cinematic universe for a long time, and his fingerprints are still all over Alien: Romulus. But with that being said, Scott is not in the directing chair for this next installment. Scott will lend his guidance as a producer, and the final say on set came down to Uruguayan director, Fede Alverez.

If I said I was familiar with all of Alvarez and his work, I would be lying. I know he has had success with the well-reviewed horror hit, Don’t Breathe (2016). Before that, Alvarez showed proper homage to a classic franchise with Evil Dead (2013). Personally, I am not an Evil Dead fan so I never got to the two most recent entries, but those who are fans of the deadites seem to be very happy.

The Girl With The Spider’s Web (2018) was a tough attempt to bring Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist back into the mainstream. If those names are familiar, they are from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which David Fincher already hauntingly adapted back in 2011. Alvarez’s latest writing credit was Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), which by no means was a good movie, but it did have that school bus sequence which somehow is still stamped in my memory.

Now Alvarez has a chance to take on another franchise steeped in prestige. Ridley Scott first brought the gothic Alien horror show to live in 1979, and ever since then it’s been about expanding the lore. It went from one Xenomorph, to many Xenomorphs. We have delved into scientific mutations of the monster and even pinned it against the Predator. And lets not forget iterations Alien 3 (1992), Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), all of which took a trip down a religious and deeply introspective path.

So, where will Alvarez go with his installment into the Xenomorph culture?

We are going back to the roots. One ship, a small crew, and one big, acid-dripping problem.

Alien: Romulus is going to take place between Alien and Aliens (1986). In the words of Alvarez himself: “Really, the movie is a survival horror, just like the first one. At the core of it, that’s what the movie is. It’s my favorite kind of horror when all you have to do is survive it.”

Alien: Romulus Timeline Explained by Fede Alvarez in Trailer Breakdown | Den of Geek

In the same Den Of Geek article, Alvarez cites that knowing the myth between Romulus and Remus in regards to the founding of Rome would add value to the viewing experience.

Looks like I need to begin studying up.

The trailer itself is only one-minute long, but it has everything an Alien fan could possibly want: tight corners, flashing lights, claustrophobic atmospheres, hordes of face huggers, body horror visuals and a terrifying, iconic score.

All of it. Feed it to me.

Alien: Romulus stars *checks cast list again to make sure* six people: Isabela Merced, Cailee Spaeny, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

Alien: Romulus launches into theaters on August 16, 2024.
