Zoë Kravitz has entered the directors chair. In recent years she has catapulted into mainstream Hollywood with appearances in Mad Max: Fury Road (2017), Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018), Big Little Lies on HBO, and The Batman (2022). Now, with her eyes behind the camera, Kravitz hopes to add to impressive young cinematic resume with an entertaining, cinematic directorial debut.

Blink Twice (2024) looks like an amalgamation of a bunch of different types of movies and entertainment.  Anyone getting Fantasy Island vibes? What about a bit of Jordan Peele’s Get Out (2017), or Brandon Cronenberg’s latest Infinity Pool (2023)? Dare I say a little bit of Peacock’s The Resort?

Blink Twice is not going to be your typical thriller.

The movie’s center piece is Slater KIng, played by Channing Tatum. This tech billionaire lives a lavish life and holds many fancy parties to placate himself and his adorers. At one of his fundraising events, King meets Frida (Naomi Ackie) and invites her and a friend to join him on his private island from a dream vacation. The setup is lavish. It’s like living in the Garden Of Eden.

But there is always a snake of truth that rears its ugly head.

This fantasy island getaway for Frida turns into a psychotic thriller of memory misplacement, missing persons and lost sense of self.

There does seem to be some sense of self referential comedy in Blink Twice. Frida’s friend, who I believe is named Jess and played by Alia Shawkat, makes a joke: “So do you think the human sacrifice Is before or after dinner?”.  Human sacrifice may not be a literal plot point, but the concept of a hidden underlying truth was very evident to Kravitz when she was writing the script.

The setup for Blink Twice takes inspiration from the allegations against Harvey Weinstein and the crimes of Jeffery Epstein. Both were men who used power to lure women into their realm, and one had a private island all to his own that nobody knew anything about.  The character Slater is meant to be a bit of an amalgamation of the two predatory men, all-be-it in a far more ripped and handsome.

The early working title for Blink Twice was Pussy Island, so that should tell you something.

It should also be noted here that Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz are engaged to be married. Talk about a power couple.

Blink Twice has more than a few recognizable faces besides Tatum in the lead role. How about Geena Davis and Haley Joel Osment getting back into the big picture mix. Christian Slater is a recognizable name, and then how about Simon Rex. REmember him from Red Rocket (2021), that truly awkward but well made porn movie?

Blink Twice arrives into theaters on August 23, 2024.
