“And so it begins.”
Well said Winston (Ian McShane). Well said.
When the Super Bowl ended, I got a text for the Wick Franchise cell phone text service I am signed up for (yes this is a real thing) and it said that it was now John Wick week. It prickled my interest. We got some new posters, some promotional goodies…but then we got this. What a way to lead into the Friday before the long weekend.
This new trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) beats itself to a remix version of Nas’ 2001 hit “Got Ur Self a Gun.” I mean, a pretty damn perfect title for a trailer song in this franchise. Am I wrong? It arrives in ear drums as if it was called into a radio DJ, and this disc mistero knows exactly whom this song is dedicated to.
A bad-ass 42 regular suit wearing killing machine who is hell bend on one thing. Getting his freedom. The theme line that punches the audience in the face midway through this trailer is “Freedom is a fight”, which means we have Mr. Wick embarking off his own revolutionary war with a loyal militia at his side. We see the Bowery King (Lawrence Fishburne) sending him off to battle in his battle armor. We see Winston give Wick his assignment of fighting Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård) in single combat to earn his freedom.
Because things never go according to plan, you must have Charon (Lance Riddick) and Sofia’s (Halle Berry) attack dogs on standby. We do not see Sofia herself in the trailer, and nor do I see Halle Berry in the credits list. How do these dogs find their way to Wick’s side? Well he has people everywhere. That is how.
Come the one-minute mark of this trailer, there is a pretty big quote…that sounds like it is coming out of the mouth of The Elder (George Georgiou).
“The only way John Wick will ever have Freedom. And Peace. Is In Death.”
Well, after The Elder says this quote, we see Wick raise his gun in the desert. We do not see him pull the trigger, but can one summize that he got the upper hand on the overarching bad guy of the entire franchise?

This 90 second preview is far more focused on the action than the previous trailer that dropped back in November. This is less focused on getting back to the roots, and more so about what is springing up from his original fight. Wick is fighting for the lifestyle he once had, one without a cloud soulful and gun-touting debt. Wick is motivated, and he is on the hunt. It is not like Chapter Two where he was put on the trail of something out of an old debt. It is not like Chapter three where he is being chased. This time, just like in the original story, Wick is the one doing the chasing. He is on the prowl on his volition.
Now, there are going to be people in his way.
March 24th is just over a month away, so just enough time to get properly amped for what promises to be one of the best action movies of the year. Let’s get after it.
And if you need some random reading and YouTube viewing, I ranked all the John Wick fights just for fun.

This is the shit I love. Chapter 18 of The Mandalorian is fantastic television and excellent Star Wars. Plenty of surprises, a bit of exposition, cool visuals and unexplained expansion of lore and stakes; all of these things make The Mines Of Mandalore a great episode of television. From the start of the episode we…
