This first trailer for The Last Of Us is sensational. That is my first reaction.
Watching this trailer, I got incredibly strong Logan (2017) trailer vibes. The Johnny Cash Hurt trailer. For those who haven’t seen it, I will link it at the bottom of the blog. The Last Of Us has the bleak western dystopian atmosphere that is wonderfully, and depressingly, addictive. Feed me all the sorrow, dread, and scares. I want to swim in the sorrow. I want to bathe in the despair. That is what I want from a story like The Last Of Us.
The story follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and their unlikely bond as they traverse through a bludgeoning brutal post-pandemic America. Unlike last year’s pandemic streaming hit Station Eleven, The Last Of Us has more enemies than humans.
Those who infected by the fungal infection are transformed into monsters. There are the runners, who are just infected and the “easiest” of the monstrosities. However, the longer one is infected, the more dangerous they become. If you are a “runner”, then you have only been infected a few days and you don’t run at anyone unless provoked. If you run into a runner (lots of running here), then you have a chance. However, Joel and Ellie are going to show us the dangers of “stalkers”, “clickers” and “bloaters”. We briefly see a “clicker” in this trailer, and they look/sound as scary as you’d expect.
Pedro Pascal is playing Joel, and it is a fucking fantastic casting choice. He has the look and for whatever reason, his thousand-yard stare is beyond mournful. Bella Ramsey plays Ellie, and everyone will remember her as the the hot-headed and verbal swordsman Lyanna Mormont in Game Of Thrones. You might want to latch onto her bandwagon because her acting debut was on HBO’s biggest television show ever, and now she is back with another sure-to-be successful Home Box Office entertainment series.
The Last Of Us also stars Gabriel Luna, Nick Offerman, and Merle Dandridge. Merle is bringing her animated voice of Marlene to the screen in live action, so video games should be excited to compare the two renditions. Speaking personally, I am excited to see Melanie Lynskey. Only in two episodes in season one, I am just a fan and she has a something that draws me in like a big ass magnet closing in on a nail.
In terms of a timeline, the first season of The Last Of Us is said to cover the majority of the first game. This allows me time to play the second, and let’s be real…probably replay the first as well. As long as it is available on the Steamdeck. For those who have played the game, The Last Of Us has a gut punching ending. If season one ends the same way, it will have people clamoring.
The Last Of Us is coming to HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2023. Speaking on behalf of everyone, it can’t come soon enough.
