I heard about Speak No Evil (2022) on a podcast and so I decided to check out the trailer. The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2022, and since then it has been scaring people.
Speak No Evil was made in Denmark and was filmed in the town of Fyn. It is directed by Christian Tafdrup and he has been honored with some awards already in the year 2022. He took home Best Director at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and was nominated for his work at the Chicago Critics Film Festival, Munich Film Festival, Film Festival Oostende. Speak No Evil was nominated for best film for Seattle International Film Festival.
The movies premise is that a Danish family, Bjørn (Morten Burian) and Louise Sidsel Siem Koch, were invited to visit a Dutch family, Patrick (Fedja van Huêt) and Karin (Karina Smulders) for a quiet, quaint, weekend. The isolated landscape that was meant to be ideal friendship breeding ground turns into a toxic sludge when the host family starts crossing the proverbial line. Can Bjørn and Louise keep up the fake smiles as their happiness waning? At what point do they break and not be able to keep killing their hosts with kindness?
Speak No Evil doesn’t give any hints of supernatural or extraterrestrial terror. It seems like to be branching out its evilness from human kind and our tangible environment. All reports are that Speak No Evil is satirical in its depiction of humanity. I don’t think that it is a coincidence that the kid of the eccentric parent has his tongue cut out. The kid who is being overshadowed by over looming parents hasn’t been able to share how he feels and what he thinks. There is a part of this trailer where parenting tactics are held under the microscope, which never leads to an argument. Ever.
Speak No Evil is not available to stream yet, but keep an eye our for it. If you see it, let me know, because I want to watch it.
