It takes a lot for an update on a phone to change an entire mood.
In horrific fashion, that’s exactly what happened on Sunday, January 26 when Kobe Bryant, along his daughter Gianna, and seven others were killed in a helicopter accident.
Personally I was working a home basketball game at Iona. Almost immediately after it first popped up on Twitter, I heard people behind me talking about it in the stands. There was a murmur that lasted the remainder of the game, and once our final buzzer sounded in the Hynes Center, it was the only thing people could talk about.
The death sent the sports world into a deep depression. Whether or not you like Kobe Bryant the person, there was no doubting he was one of the toughest competitors to even lace it up on the hardwood.
Now is as good a time as any look at his animated short which won an Oscar at the 2018 Academy Awards. Dear Basketball is Kobe’s wonderful, unique and personal love letter to the game of basketball.
