Back At The REEEEEEM Fantasy Football Week 1 Recap
PREAMBLE
It’s always great to start out week one with a win. Am I refererring to your fantasy football team, or to your real team? That is the question.
These reports are hopefully going to come with some regularity still. If I miss a week or two, I apologize in advance. I love doing it.
Steve, you think if I pitched this to Steven Cheah he would let me do it for the fancy league and I could have some more work to do at home?
Speaking of working at home, they moved up my raditation appointments for my back so I will hopefully be able to move/walk again soon without crazy amounts of backpain. That’s a plus.
There are some who are in pain after week on of fantasy. Most of the matchups were unfortunately not that close. Why does that always seem like the case? Steve and Lobo at least had a mini-sweat on Monday night but it was nothing too heavy. And McLaughlin was down by so much that having McCaffrey not active didn’t have any effect. Not having McCaffrey for week two however, that is something to fret about.
Regardless, fantasy football is here.
Also this is an add on, I wrote way to much. There is going to be less writing next time. These take time. But the template is setup.
Let’s get going.
WEEK 1 SCOREBOARD
Ritz crashed by my place on Sunday for a bit to watch some football, and while we didn’t win our parlay, I did pick up two wins. The New England Patriots won their game, and I was able to pick up the win in fantasy. Ritz can attest I was playing down the fantasy because I was in shock, but Josh Allen and his four total touchdowns carried me to the day.
Ritz boldly declared to me before the game that he was going to start Caleb Williams over Brock Purdy because he was that confident in the Bears over the Titans. While he was right about the bet portion, he was not necessarily right about the quarterback. Purdy only got 10.34 points on the bench, but it was still a bold choice.
If we are being honest, we had an absolute shellacking here. McLaughlin didn’t have to worry about his Sunday, and neither did Ronan. For McClorey, the majority of his production came from his wide receivers. A.J. Brown had a touchdown on Friday, and that followed Xavier Worthy’s two touchdowns on Thursday. Sunday night, Cooper Cupp caught a career-high 14 targets, and that may only go up with Puka Nacua now out for four weeks.
McLaughlin didn’t even try to salvage anything on Monday night with Christian McCaffrey out. He could have made the switch to Jordan Mason, who was on his bench, but I guess he just decided to say fuck it? It doesn’t help that Marvin Harrison Jr. scored only 0.9 points.
The closest match of the week was Chris Lobo vs. Steve Kultzow. Steve needed a miracle from Breece Hall on Monday night, and he did not get it. Lobo’s victory was buoyed by Anthony Richardson and his three deep throws, which helped him to 26.08 points.
It is genuinely curious how Kyler Murray scored just 14.18 points against Buffalo when all I saw him doing was scrambling and running around. Keon Coleman as a rookie wide receiver, put up 7.1 points. Does it hurt Steve knowing he had Rhamondre Stevenson on his bench with 20.1 points? Also having no Tee Higgins really hurts.
Tommy Simon opened the season with a major win despite his quarterback scoring less than 10 points. It was more than made up for his running backs with Saquon Barkley and Joe Mixon both scoring 25+ points. Tommy Simon was also the only team to have a tight end score more than 10 points. Mike Evans may not go up against the Washington defense every week, but week one went okay for T-Si.
Buzzi isnโt going to be writing home about week one. It doesnโt help that his three starting wide receivers scored a combined 10.5 points. Sure, Chris Godwin had 18.3 points in the flex spot, but you expect more from your three primary pass catchers. It does look like Brandon Aubrey is going to be a weapon. He was lining up to take a 71-yard field goal.
Matthew McGinnity and his team of Baltimore Ravens surged to victory. But I have to ask, is Justin Tucker washed? He was 1-for-5 last year from 50 yards and missed his first attempt this year. What are we talking about here? But we can relish in the positive. Lamar Jackson scored 25.12 points, and Stefon Diggs settled nicely with 18.9 points in Houston.
Jimmy Simon has C.J. Stroud saw Diggs guzzling up all the touchdown passes he was throwing. Hell, Jimmy was in a really tough spot with Tank Dell and Diggs going against him. JaโMarr Chase was limited, and Patrick Surtain held DK Metcalf in check in Seattle. None of Jimmyโs wide receivers scored more than 10 points.
It was not a shocker that the five lowest-scoring teams of the week took the losses this week. The five losing programs also had the five lowest scoring points compared to projected.
Six of the 10 teams projected lower than their total this week. Three teams well outperformed expectations, including Ronan by over 30 points.
Only one rostered tight end scored double-digit points this week. Credit to T-Si for playing Kyle Pitts, who scored the only touchdown in Atlanta’s loss to Pittsburgh.
Ronan, with help from his kicker’s 26 points on Monday night, set the benchmark in four categories in week one. It may be difficult to pass 26 kicker points all season, but I could see that sticking around for a long time.
Jimmy has the dubious mark of setting four low points this week in his loss to McGinnity.
Strange to have two highest scorers this week be kickers, and to have the highest scoring team of the week have a kicker as its highest kicker.
The gap between the best kicker and the worst kicker this week is 25 points. That is a lot.
Tommy Simon dominated the running back position with his three headed monster or Barkley, Pacheco and Mixon. Barkley was the highest scorer this week, and Mixon had the most touches this week of any running back. That’s a good combo.
New player report cards are out and below if you guys want to take a look.
It’ll have things a bit more organized personally, like average range per category, record in categeory and average total in category all in one place. It’ll also have average rank for the week, and placement in the standings.
Ronan and I matchup after being the top two scorers in week one. I am in a bit of a predicament because Puka Nacua is now on the IR and he was the second wide receiver that I drafted. The big thing is that Ronan and I are going to need to wait till Monday because Ronan has Jalen Hurts and Bijan Robinson AND A.J. Brown all going on Monday night. Also doesn’t help that with Nacua out, Kupp is going to get more targets…and Ronan has Cupp.
Ritz may not put as much trust in rookie quarterbacks in his week two matchup against Lobo. Christopher may have to worry about David Njoku in week two because he got rattled a bit against the Dallas Cowboys. Ritz is looking for his win of the season and Lobo wants to stay perfect.
McLaughlin and Buzzi are two winless teams hoping that their quarterbacks put up better numbers than in week one. Don’t know how but both scored less than 15 points in week one. McLaughlin has to worry about Christian McCaffrey not being ready for the Minnesota Vikings, and the 49ers might not need to rush him because they looked good against the Jets. Buzzi probably wants more than 2.8 points from Amon-Ra St. Brown.
McGinnity and Steve’s matchup looks to be promising on paper. Both feature tight ends in Mark Andrews and Dalton Kincaid who did absolutely nothing in their week one matchups. Should McGinnity be worried about Lamar Jackson this week? Probably not. Should Steve be worried that the Jets losing to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football without McCaffrey? Maybe.
We have a sibiling battle between Jimmy and T-Si. Burrow can not be as bad as he was in week one, it was his fifth worst fantasy game ever. That is bad news for Jimmy. The only thing is that Jimmy has Ja’Marr Chase who may siffen off the points. Either way it is going to come down to sunday night with C.J. Stroud for Jimmy and Joe Mixon for Tommy.
TEAMS ON A BYE: None
STANDINGS
The defending champion begins the season in first place, just where he left off.
Standings don’t mean much at the start of the season, we know that, but still fun to look at.
The playoff percentages will fluxuate all season, but as of right now there are five people with a 50% shot or bettter.
There is some sort of bias against Steve because he is below 30% playoff probablity while Ritz and Buzzi meet that threshold despite scoring less points.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
“Starting off the season with a win is always a good feeling. I couldn’t really focus on fantasy because the New England Patriots are somehow 1-0 after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals. There can only be so much football success in the Northeast, so this is all going to blowup.”
Jonathan Stanko – Manager of I’m A Kittle Teapot
“Great to start the season with a win. Whole new team, going for back to back titles”
Ronan McClorey – Manager of New You CeeDee, Now You Don’t
“Great week 1 win. Next up is Ritz. I love you buddy. I’m sorry your gonna get the Fat L”
Chris Lobo – Manager of Los Conquistadores
“Really proud of the way our team came out and performed in Week 1. Saquon received a lot of hate for being the 5th pick overall and he came out and had a great game! Looking forward to the Battle of the Simon’s matchup next week!”
Tommy Simon – Manager of Another ‘Quon Bites The Dust
Even in victory we need to be humble and recognize where we can improve. I left Isaiah [Likely] on the bench and we should have beaten Jimmy by even more. To the fans and the rest of the league, I apologize. We will work to do better next week.”
