What we have here is a short recommendation blog.
Jagged (2021) is a 2021 music documentary that was brought to life by Bill Simmons and The Ringer in partnership with HBO as part of their Music Box series. The Alison Klayman directed movie is a look at the young career and first record-breaking album of Alanis Morissette.
Too young to recognize the name? Yea, I was too. But once Jagged started playing and the tracks of her iconic studio album Jagged Little Pill began playing, you will be sucked into a sing-a-long you didn’t you had signed up for. The Canadian singer released Jagged Little Pill through a new music/entertainment company Maverick, and soon Morissette herself could call herself a Maverick of the lyrical game.
Jagged Little Pill absolutely slaps. There is no other way to put it. There are 13 songs on this album and it is a personal guarantee of mine that you know at least five of these songs. You, the listener will be humming and singing along before you can even name the song or remember where you know it from.
Jagged is an in depth look at Morissette herself. She sits in the hot seat reflecting on the early stages of her career and how her unique and groundbreaking genre bending album shaped society, her career, and the music business.
You know that the slant is going to be favorable heading into a documentary about a single artist in this context. With that being said, who gives a flying shit because Alanis Morissette is outstanding. She is a fucking delight. She is not too serious about herself, the story, or her past. She is able to laugh at herself but also take notes of things she learned from her successes and her failures. The relationship with her band is very organic and the fact that their bassist selection was by accident is a wonderfully endearing fun fact.
The tour of Jagged Little Pill took off like a bonfire doused in gasoline. While I for one would never be in a crowd like that just because I am who I am, I can still appreciate the passion that everyone sings with during the crazy show. Morissette took the world by storm from Canada and Jagged hooks you in for an emotionally driven harmonica filled sing-along adventure.
Credit to Alison Klayman who made the most enjoyable of the Music Box documentaries thus far. I had the most visceral reaction to watching Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage (2021), but I had no desire to go and listen to that music. Personally I did not enjoy DMX: Don’t Try To Understand (2021), but I did pick up some things from Mr. Saturday Night (2021). Only one movie made me put on an album and listen to it on repeat for a weekend, and that movie is Jagged.
