Well this is a surprise! A glorious, wonderful, beautiful and bountiful surprise! We have a new trailer for Dune: Part Two (2023) to dive into. And without a further ado, let’s let the spice wash over us.
The first thing from the trailer that sticks out like a beautiful sore thumb are the different color pallets. The first trailer showed off the chrome, black & gray framing of the Harkonnen home world. This second trailer really shows how cinematographer Greig Fraser is flexing his muscles. Fraser won the Oscar for Dune (2022), and he is gunning for a second Academy Award.
This second trailer has the desert texture as seen in the original, as well as the gray architecture and mood of the Harkonnen. A new addition to Dune: Part Two is an aggressive sheen. We see it first in the trailer with Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) bashing in the head of a Harkonnen (I think) soldier. It then pops up again before a battle sequence in the desert.
The biggest shock? We have some GREEN! The color green! And we have our first sighting of The Emperor! Christopher Walken is playing Emperor Shaddam IV and our first glimpses at him are glorious. He is talking with Princess Irulan Corrino (Florence Pugh) who is notifying him that Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is still alive. The Emperor, seeing how he set up Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) with the Sardukar to take down the Atreides house, does not like the notion that there is a living heir to a house he attempted to erase off the map.
Dune: Part Two is going to be a war movie, and it is going to escalate quickly. We see Paul Muad’Dib Atreides learning quickly with the Fremen, about the Fremen. We see Paul, at midway point of the trailer, embracing the guerrilla warfare with Chani (Zendaya). By the end of the preview, it is Muad’Dib atop a mountain speaking in the voice to an army of Fremen with more confidence than we have ever seen him have.
The major theme of the second half of this trailer revolves around the power Paul Muad’Dib chooses to have. We see Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) talking to Paul and asking why he doesn’t use the power of the Fremen’s belief in him. Paul notes to his thought-lost mentor that his powers as the Muad’Dib are not to be trifled with. All of his visions lead to horror, and it isn’t because he loses control, it’s because he fully gains it.
If you have done YouTube deep dives, or have had the time to read the books (God bless you if you have), you know what Paul is referring to. It is an eyebrow raising truth bomb from Paul that no one understands besides himself, and those who are more than just cursory fans of the franchise. For the record, I am only like one level above it so let’s learn more together.
Dune: Part Two is going to have components relating to crusades, genocide and revolution. We have a young man who is called a prophet, and actually is one in a real sense of the world. He is a new, but initially unwelcomed, leader of a stubborn group of outcasts who have distinct traits and customs solely unique to their people and environmental atmosphere. A unifying force between the new leader and the group he is at the helm of is a common enemy. This enemy is ruthless, power hungry, and they have friends in high places. But this enemy’s weakness? Hubris.
A tale as old as time.
Just some other tid-bits worth mentioning before closing up.
Dune: Part Two releases in theaters on November 3, 2023.

There is a lot happening in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. One could argue that there is too much going on.
Much maligned as the worst of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible II doesn’t do itself any favors upon rewatch.
