“After barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tyler Rake is back, and his team is ready to take on their next mission.”

Director: Sam Hargrave
Writer: Joe Russo
Staring: Chris Hemsworth (Does it matter who else)
Release Date: June 16, 2023
IMDB

Tyler Rake was clinically dead nine months ago. Can you get any more obvious about someone wanting to be reborn? Doesn’t make me super confident in Joe Russo’s writing if that is where we are going with this. Russo did write on the original Extraction (2020) (wow early blog here), but the dialogue is not what we come to these movies for. You do have to write action on the page as well…but are we going to get The Gray Man (2022) or are we going to get a satisfying sequel?

Rake is reborn, but just because you are alive doesn’t mean you have a reason to live. That is what Rake needs to find. And he is going to need fight through a storm of bullets and explosions to find it.

The trailer for Extraction 2 has all the stunts and gunplay you want to see. I personally don’t get excited about the Russo brothers name, but it is a draw because they did make the second biggest box office success of all time. My main concern comes from the fact that their expertise is in comic book action, and they they are very good at. But when it comes to guns, fists and real-life tangible swagger, they have a huge swing and a miss with The Gray Man. The best part about that movie was Ryan Reynolds, but it was when his character wasn’t in action sequences. It was when he was just being Ryan Reynolds.

Extraction 2 brings back stuntman and director Sam Hargrave to helm the project. Following in the footsteps of Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, Hargrave brings his unique experience to the camera with outstanding one-takes and loud, boisterous, sequences. There is going to be a 21-minute long one-take scene in Extraction 2 where Rake needs to escape some sort of prison environment. The trailer shows a part of the jailbreak, and I for one think this is a great bit of marketing on behalf of the the movie. The first Extraction got a tons of attention for its 12-minute one-take, and now they are upping the ante. it is going to be finger-pointing OMG! It’s Happening moment when Rake begins decimating bodies.

Do we have a guess at what the body count is going to be in Extraction 2? According to Netflix, the official kill count of the first movie was 183. Setting the over under at 183.5, I think the safe bet is the over. Sequels always go more crazy.

According to GamesRadar, Extraction is among Netflix’s top 15 most watch movies. Others among the list are The Adam Project (2022), Red Notice (2021) and The Gray Man. I hope I speak for everyone when I say that Extraction 2 better be better than those three aforementioned disappointments.

We will find out if Rake will rake in the audiences when Extraction 2 releases on Netflix on June 16.
