Do you know Matt Turner? Do you know the current goalie for team USA that has two shutouts thus far in the 2022 World Cup?
Right now Matt Turner is sitting atop the world and has proved himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Before standing on his head in Qatar, Turner had quite a fucking journey to get between the pipes for the Red, White and Blue.
I saw this tweet, and something in my brain clicked.
Wait a second. He was at Fairfield playing soccer in the early 2010s? That is when I was a student-worker for the Iona athletics department, and the Gaels and Stags are in the same athletic conference. What a sec…he was highlight on ESPN for the No. 1 spot in Not Top 10? I was part of filming a moment like that.
I look at the thread, and holy shit. I filmed the moment.
I filmed what is arguably Matt Turner’s most embarrassing moment on the soccer pitch. I was there atop the press box and filming on a shitty camcorder and my buddy Steve was down in the press box ensuring the Tricaster didn’t blow up. What world was this? This is the ultimate Kevin Bacon six degrees of separation.
Since that moment in 2013, Matt Turner was named to the All-MAAC Second Team in his senior season at Fairfield, played in the Premier Development League and then signed a professional contract with the New England Revolution (undrafted). He started for the Revolution in 2018, then dropped down to third string for a stint in 2019 before earning the starting role back and leading New England to a playoff push for the first time in five years. In 2020 he was nominated for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and in 2021 he took home the accolade. Since then he has been employed by Arsenal in the Premiere League.
And then there is the International career. He made his debut in 2021 against Trinidad and Tobago and recorded a clean sheet and saved a penalty kick. He started all six games for the USA in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup and was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament. He earned his spot on the USMNT roster, and now he is starting in net on the world’s biggest stage.
This man, Matt Turner, has had the roller coaster of a career. It is fucking unbelievable that I filmed arguably one of his lowest athletic moments. I would love to ask him if he remembers it at all. He surely has had tougher moments, but this was Turner as a young chap and a walk-on to a mid-major division I soccer program. Totally different stages of life. What was running through his head in that moment? What was he thinking as a young student-athlete who could have never dreamed being the goalie for team USA?
With all that being said, I seriously wish the best of luck to the United States Men’s National Team tomorrow morning against the Netherlands. Coverage begins tomorrow at 9:00 AM and the game begins at 10:00 AM on FOX.
