This is going to be the first of a few trailer reactions. Catching up for lost time while binging Michael Myers killing people.

The Pale Blue Eye (2023) is a story taking place at West Point in 1830 and it follows a tired detective by the name of Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) and his journey to solve the gruesome murder of a young cadet. Without cooperation from from the victims fellow cadets, Landor finds aid from one non-traditional cadet, a man who would become world renowned as the famous Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling).

This is the third time that Christian Bale is teaming up with director and writer Scott Cooper. The two turned to the woods and minds in 2013 with Out Of The Furnace, and then made a western drama (that is fantastic) in 2017 with Hostiles. Both of those movies had a distinct vibe of dread and longing, and it would appear that The Pale Blue Eye is going to be just as mourn filled.

The Pale Blue Eye trailer is short, leaving much to the imagination. I want to thank whomever made this decision. If we are going to be thrown into a horror mystery, then don’t tell me anything at all. Let me turn on Netlfix with blindfolds on and let the blue hue of this movie enlighten me.

Did you notice the blue everywhere? How could you not. Cooper is infusing this movie with the sorrowful feeling that the color tends to signify. This movie is going to be in the dark and the only light may be the pale blue moonlight. Is the Pale Blue Eye the moon? Is that what it signifies?

I think I figured it out.

Can’t leave here without mentioning Gillian Anderson. She is the perfect encapsulation of beauty and danger. She can scare me with her eyes. She is perfect for this.

The Pale Blue Eyes releases on Netflix on January 6, 2023.
