Gut reaction to this trailer. Woof, the writing is terrible.
Alright, that is out of the way. Now let’s try and dive into what the first look of Black Adam (2022) brings to the table.
Very glad to hear the voice of Pierce Bronson. Playing the part of Dr. Fate, he does bring a sense of regal nature to a mysterious role. He opens the trailer really just putting Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) down, highlighting how he has really nothing to live for.
Then we get some back story from our anti-hero. He was a slave, then was killed, but was reborn and embalmed with a sense of duty after his son sacrificed himself so his father would have a chance at life. With this new outlook on life, he is reborn without a submissive bone in his body.
There are various other superheroes in this world. They appear to be their own little super group: Doctor Fate is the vocal leader, and there is undeniably Hawkman involved. According to Screenrant, the Ant-Man looking dude is the Atom Smasher.
The crux of the trailer comes in a conversation between Hawkman and Black Adam:
Hawkman: In this world, there are heroes and villains. Heroes don’t kill people.
Black Adam: Well, I do.
Dwayne Johnson is trying to being a little bit of his WWE personna with him; the I am such an asshole but I am so good at it that you need to respect me.
Doctor Fate is talking to Black Adam and telling him that he has the choice to be the savoir or destroyer of earth, and that decision is strictly up to him. Is this soon after Black Adam awoke from his 5K year slumber? Is this after he has been experimenting with his power?
There is not much known about who Black Adam and company are going to be going up against? Who are the big bad guys? We see some people riding alien looking hovercrafts, so perhaps someone is on earth with technology that shouldn’t be.
I will admit to looking up a bit of knowledge. According to Gamer Rant, these bike riders are the Intergang who have a direct connecting to Darkseid, who we finally got a look at in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). Is there going to be a direct correlation or callback?
The overarching this is whether or not we get a reference to The Flash? With Ezra Miller being a bad human (allegedly), it would appear that DC needs to start thinking of audibles that don’t involve the crisis event that is often used for Retcons.
I have seen four movies directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, most recently being Jungle Cruise (2021). I was not a huge fan of The Commuter (2018), but I was wonderfully surprised The Shallows (2016). The first movie I saw that was directed by Collet-Serra was Unknown (2011) which is perfectly my kind strictly average slop.
Black Adam attempts to capture audiences attention in late October 2022.
