I love everything about this trailer. The vibes of this All The Old Knives (2022) trailer are right up my alley.
What we have here is a good old-fashioned spy thriller that is wrought with political and romantic tension. What we have here is an underrated Chris Pine playing Henry, a beaten down possibly not to be trusted man who wants nothing more than to do his job well and reconnect with his former lover, Celia (Thandiwe Newton).
Alright, a bit more into the weeds here. Let’s dive in.
Janus Metz is directing All The Old Knives, and I have not seen anything that he has done. He has made one full feature length movie, and that was Borg vs. McEnroe (2017), Otherwise, he has made a lot of documentaries and shorts.
The movie is being written by the author of the book it is based on, Janus Olen Steinhauer. The only other writing experience he had for screen is the television show Berlin Station, which ran 29 episodes from 2016-2019 on EPIX.
So what is this story about?
There was a hijacking of a plane in Vienna and the experience did not unfold well for the CIA. Vick Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) tasks Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) with finding a suspected mole within the agency that was connected with the hostage-taking crisis. That task takes Henry in front of many individuals, including his former lover Celia Harrison. There is obviously a bit of sexual tension sewing through it all, but there is still the task at hand at finding out the truth.
Categorized strictly as a thriller, All The Old Knives is exactly that type of movie that is good for streaming. It is a movie that would never do well in theaters, but it will be watching heavily on streaming with its powerful cast.
Chris Pine was in a movie called The Contractor (2022) that came out earlier this year, and seeing how it stars Ben Foster I may have to check it out. That is the last movie since Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), which we all know as a terrible piece of movie-making. Now he is playing an attractive slime-ball who is kind of giving off strong James Bond type vibes. Next year he has Dungeons & Dragons (2023) and the new Star Trek movie. That will be a large year for him.
Celia Harrison is back looking to rebound from the struggling Reminiscene (2021). Harrison has been able to be in the limelight more since her rice with Westworld, and that new season is supposed to be coming out later this year. Westworld is one that needs a bit of patience and an understanding you simply will not understand any of it.
Also playing a large part in this movie will be Lawrence Fishburne, who was been working in TV a lot recently. His last movie The Ice Road (2021), which was not strong. Upcoming he has six movies that are in the process of being made. He will be doing a lot of press junkets it seems. Pryce just brings a smile to my face. His voice is fantastic he is damn good as well.
All The Old Knives premiers on Amazon Prime and select theaters on April 8, 2022.
Loved this draft idea from The Big Picture crew. I am not going to be able to do my normal redrafting because there is just enough movies to pick from, but I will have fun going through all of the different categories and determining what my dream lineup would be from the movies i have…
