“A new installment of the ‘Scream’ horror franchise will follow a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.”

Director: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Writers: James Vanderbilt, Guy Busick, Kevin Williamson
Staring: Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Marley Shelton, Jenna Ortega, Melissa Carpenter, Dylan Minnette, Jack Quaid
Release Date: January 14, 2022

One has to think that this Scream (2022) was greenlit after the massive success of Halloween (2018). I don’t think that it is a coincidence that the trailer for the latest edition in the franchise comes out the same week that Halloween Kills (2021) premieres.

Looking at this trailer. the first minute of it is a direct homage to the Drew Barrymore opening scene in the original Scream (1996). There is the phone call, “want to play a game” and panic. It is a direct callback to what enthralled people first.

Is it bad that now whenever I hear the question “Do you want to play a game?” I immediately think of the Saw franchise now? Probably.

The callback from the first minute of this trailer is followed up by Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) taking a phone call from Dewey Riley (David Arquette). The duo from the original is back as the killings in their hometown have begun. There are lines later in the trailer that signify how this time is different from others. Need to differentiate this sequel from the others I suppose.

The other notable face in this trailer is Courtney Cox in the role of Gale Weathers. Never would I have thought that she would look the most different from her original character compared to the others. Among the group of teenagers who are recognizable to the main audience are Melissa Barrera from In The Heights (2021), Dylan Minnetti of 13 Reasons Why fame and Jack Quaid from The Boys.

The Scream trailer touches on the nostalgic buttons of the past. There is a discussion about those who are most likely to die and a direct reference to the rules one must follow to try and survive. Among the memory triggers is a line: “The attacks were all on the people who were related to the original killers,” It feels like this Scream is an attempt to erase some of the memories of the other sequels with how much it is calling back to the original.

One reason I personally have high hopes for Scream is that it is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler GIllett. The men directed Ready Or Not (2019) so if the movie takes the comedic with thriller vibes, then they have someone who may make this work. This is the first Scream movie not to be directed by Wes Craven, so here is the hoping the originally magic can transfer.

The expected release date for Scream is January 14, 2022. Will Ghostface have a cultural resurrections like Michael Myers? We will have to wait to the new year to find out.

The REEEEEEM Fantasy Football Week 7 Recap

Standings at the end of week six. Michael Ritz has won six in a row and is showing zero signs of slowing down. It is a bloodbath to whomever is playing him, which is not good for your boy (me) come week eight. Maybe most remarkable about Ritz is that he has only made three […]

The Bachelorette Contestants Power Rankings – Episode 1 (10/25/21)

Here are my initial thoughts on Michelle’s season premiere. There was some drama, but overall not a terribly entertaining premiere? Am I being too harsh? I don’t know. I can let other people be the judge. Michelle’s dress is great. Hands down, looks gorgeous. She is the first bachelorette in a while who does not […]
