Is there a better way to start a bleak Monday than with new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker footage?

Star Wars took D23 by storm and claimed all the major headlines, most notably the latest teaser of the upcoming finale of the Skywalker saga. As of Tuesday morning, the trailer is still the number one trending video on YouTube.

The opening 1:11 is a quick montage from the first eight films in the Skywalker journey. Whether it highlighting the characters, the landscape, the tone, some plot points; it’s all just a simmer until the pot boils over with new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker footage.

You get a glimpse of this trilogy’s squad with Rey at the helm, all of them looking over what looks like a nomadic village. The landscape of this scene reminded me of the opening moments from the first trailer that dropped earlier this year with Rey leaping over a First Order cruiser…could these two clips be intertwined with maybe Rey leading the First Order away from hurting innocent civilians?

Then there is the most visually striking shot of the entire teaser.

Folks, we are going to get a massive space battle. This is framed to look like old school Revolutionary War style: line up on the battlefield, star each other down while the environment lashes out and then a simultaneous “CHARGE” brings the fray. The worm-POV look at the imperial ships cascading across our vision with lightening accenting the already bleak tenors is really pretty to look at. Safe to say though, Finn disagrees.

Then there is now twitter-trending red-eyed C-3PO, which I don’t have any decent hypothesis for, followed by Rey training in a vibrant wooded area, perfecting her lightsaber tossing technique.

Our first new footage of Kylo Ren is just Adam Driver strutting away from his spaceship with a purpose, followed up by he and Rey dueling it out on what looks like a soon-to-break levy.

Cut to black for three or four seconds…

Obviously this two second snippet is what send all Star Wars fans abuzz. With looming presence of Emperor Palpatine hovering over the story (and as voiceover in the trailer), fans don’t know what that power of the Dark Side can bring in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Does it have enough sway to pull Rey into its grasp?

I personally think that his is just a dream sequence or some sort of vision. Like when Luke Skywalker fought Darth Vader in Dagobah and saw his own face in Vader’s helmet. The only pause I have in that is why would they debut a massive new lightsaber technique for just a vision sequence?

I think we can expect a new full trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker very shortly. I’m thinking opening weekend of NFL football…Monday Night Football on ESPN. A Disney property with all of America watching.

December 20, 2019 cannot come fast enough.
