MaXXXine (2024) is Ti West reuniting with Mia Goth for a third time, and this time the writer/director is bringing bloody villainy to 1980s Hollywood. Everything about this trailer screams towards horror movie fanatics. The references are large and in your face, but if there is anyone who has earned the trust of horror movie fanatics, its Ti West.
My writings this week are going to be shorter because of a monster work project, but that handcuff on my personal time works well for this post because I want to know as little as possible about MaXXXine heading in. Seeing X (2022) and Pearl (2022) without knowing anything about them going in was a true treat. Expectations were nothing. Now, expectations are sky high. But with that being said, West will make it all work.
After watching the trailer for MaXXXine once, it’s rather cool how Ti West is combining themes from his first two movies in this more neon hue. X had power hungry, sex craven filmmakers looking for their big break. Pearl expanded on the idea by going microscopic on a personal level, diving into the psyche-shattering up-bringing that could create such a sociopath. Now with MaXXXine, it would appear that we are getting a character in Maxine (Mia Goth) who is getting her big break, but we don’t know anything about her past. It’s a blending of ideas, and when a writer/director has been diving deep into one line of thinking for a long time, it usually leads to good things.
MaXXXine also stars some very familiar names alongside Mia Goth. Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian fame stands alongside Elizabeth Debicki of Tenet (2020), Lily Collins, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale and Kevin Fucking Bacon. The man who knows everyone by six degrees got his start in Friday The 13th (1980), so it’s only fitting he’s involved in another slasher set in the 1980s.
MaXXXine comes out on July 5, 2024. That’s my wedding day. Do we think Emma will let me go and see it?
