Fantasy Baseball Recap: Week One (March 20 – March 31)
So here we are. Back again.
The fact that the first week only consists of four full slates of MLB days is tough. If you were a team that was affected by the rain outs on opening day too, then you got extra fucked up.
It is a long season. A 22 week season. One week does not make the difference, but there is no denying that winning week one is a nice way to start the year.
Unfortunately I do not have the time to do deeper dives into my own matchups. And no, it is not because I am bad at fantasy baseball. I am putting more effort into the group stuff that hopefully everyone can get something from each week.
This year I have incorporated a few different things. I am going to do player report cards every week. It will show just a player and where they ranked every week. This player report card will also show their average rank for the week, which in theory tells us exactly how they stood up to everyone that specific week. It will be a way to tell who truly is playing best of the best, and who is getting more screwed with tough results.
I have made a slideshow of images, as well as provided links to each persons individual report card.
If anyone has any thoughts, comments, concerns or ideas, please feel free to let me know.
WEEK ONE SCOREBOARD
Michaud defeats Stanko, 8-2-1.
If you look at the statistics, Michaud had a fucking dominant week. The man basically couldn’t miss in regards to any category.
Christian Walker, first basemen for Arizona, had an outstanding week for Michaud with four runs scored, five runs batted in and two home runs.
Joe Musgrave didn’t do Michaud any favors with a 9.72 ERA over two starts and 8.1 innings. But it didn’t matter because Michaud still won four pitching categories.
The only thing that I’ll say about my team is FUCK YOU Jose Leclerc! The reliever for the Texas Rangers allowed four earned runs on Sunday, and I would go one to lose the ERA category because of his flubbing. Brutal.
Eric defeats Billy, 6-4-1.
Eric barely beat out Billy in the hits, runs, and home runs category.
Xander Bogaerts getting extra games against Los Angeles helped because he had the most hits, most runs and tied for the most RBI for Eric.
Billy didn’t have the best week, but he has to be grateful for Eric having an dismal pitching week.
Billy may be looking at the combination of Isaac Paredes and Brandon Nimmo; they combined for 1 for 21 with no runs scored, no home runs and no runs batted in.
Michael Kenney defeats DiMaio, 9-2-0.
Mookie Betts is pretty damn good at baseball, and Mike is happy for that.
Betts went 11 for 22 with nine runs scored, four home runs, 10 runs batted in and seven walks. WHAT A FUCKING WEEK!
Teoscar Hernandez also had three home runs on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Was still able to win the ERA and WHIP category despite less than optimal numbers.
DiMaio had a team ERA of 6.646 and a team WHIP of 1.938. Not ideal numbers.
The relief pitchers for DiMaio really screwed the pooch. Robert Suarez and Jose Alvarado each had ERAs of 9.00 or more. It also doesn’t help that Mason Miller of Oakland started a game and went one inning and did very poorly.
Silver lining for DiMaio is that Juan Soto looked really good in a Yankee uniform.
Typing this out made me very upset.
Vaghi defeats Huntley, 6-5-0.
Vaghi’s victory comes via the pitching categories where it won four of the five.
The fact that Huntley had Bailey Ober pitch on Sunday helps…Ober went 1.1 innings for Minnesota, allowing nine hits, eight earned runs while striking out one.
If there is a silver-lining for Huntley, at least he came from behind to win the wins category on Sunday.
If Vaghi looks at his box score he will shocked to see Nolan Arenado and Matt Olson combining to go 2 for 25. Ouch.
Bove defeats List, 6-3-2.
Much like Vaghi, who took Bove’s team name, Bove won his week one matchup primarily because of the pitching categories.
Bove swept all five categories, all by wide margins.
All five of the Bove’s starters had an ERA of 3.00 or under.
Even Matt Strahm, who finished the week with an ERA of 13.50, had a winning decision this week.
Jack List won three hitting categories while the two teams tied in home runs and stolen bases.
Freddie Freeman led the way for Jack with six hits.
He was one of three players with four RBI: Freeman, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Cedric Mullins.
Nice job by Jazz and Cedric to drive in four with only two hits apiece.
Week one truly belonged to Kenney and Michaud. Dominant performances from the both of them.
Kenney led the way in five different hitting categories and finished with the second best ASR (average statistical rank)
Michaud led only one category this week, but he was top four in all but one category. His lowest category was OBP which was eighth, but that didn’t diminish him too much. Michaud was still the only one with an ASR under three.
Both myself and DiMaio got tough matchups in week one having to go against Michaud and Kenney.
Both of us ranked fourth and fifth respectfully in ASR, but came away with the most lopsided losses.
Eric is the luckiest man this week with his 6-4-1 win over Billy.
Billy was worst in three different categories this week.
Eric’s highest rank was fourth in three different categories.
Bove and Vaghi were able to win despite ranking ninth and tenth in the hits category.
Vaghi was also last in runs and home runs.
Bove was also last in on base percentage.
Four different teams didn’t have any saves this week.
DiMaio was the only team that didn’t have a win in regards to pitching.
How about this kinda sad but super fun fact?
Huntley’s 2.016 WHIP this week is the worst of the week, by far. It also would be the worst when you go back to all of last season as well. The worst WHIP last year was Billy in week 16 with 1.824.
It’s only the first week so we can’t put too much stock into the standings, but with that being said, it must be nice for Michael Kenney to have the top spot.
The number six was popular this week with many of the losing or winning sides having a six in the W or L column.
One thing I am not used to seeing while writing these recaps last year is Mike DiMaio in last place. I don’t believe that is going to be the case for the long haul.
