The Real Reason For Sundays Fantasy Football Week 8 Recap
PREAMBLE
We turn the page on a new month of the calendar year and now there are six weeks left in the regular season. If you look at the standings and the playoff% column, ESPN seems to think that the race is a fait accompli. Well, at least when it comes to the first three playoff spots. Bove, Gabe and Eric are all above 90% already to make the playoffs. It is fair to say that Tim is sitting pretty with a still unblemished record, but I think it’s still premature to say the pedestal is locked in.
Week eight of the NFL season was an absolute dud in terms of entertainment value. THere was more drama in the Greg Brick vs. TImmy Drakely matchup than in any game on the field. Yes, that is including the New York battle royale at the Meadowlands.
Week nine of the Real Reasons For Sunday fantasy football league is highlighted by a fantastic matchup between Eric and Bove. Eric has a chance to chop the head off the monster and claim the unclaimable.
Six games left. Everyone counts. Back to byes this week, so best of luck with the roster management as things heat up.
Let’s get going.
WEEK 8 SCOREBOARD
Huntley came out guns blazing and stampeded me as if I was in the jungle in the predator movie. You know, when BIlly Gunn and company are shooting enough bullets to supply a small army into the emptiness? In my opinion, the most dangerous team in the league had Jalen Hurts go off for 27.36 points, and the WR duo of JaโMarr Chase and Jaylen Waddle combined for 50.3 points. Also Breece Hall with 21.3 points in a rain soaked game is impressive.
Come on Lamar Jackson. You only scored 11.98 points against the Arizona Cardinals? Ugh, and Cooper Kupp had a shit game too. Oh, and Darren Waller hurting his hamstring in the first quarter. A receipt for success. I have two positive takeaways from this game; Jahmyr Gibbs is really proving himself as an RB1 option, and AJ Brown has an argument to be the ebay wide receiver in the NFL.
Gabe, still riding the CJ Stroud band wagon (though it has gotten wobbly), improves to 6-2 on the year. The wide receivers for Gabe combined for the second fewest points in the week, but it was still good enough to take down the team that had the fewest wide receiver points of the week.
Jackโs wide receivers Devante Adams, Cortland Sutton and Jakobi Meyers combined for 15.9 points. Will things get better for the duo now that head coach Josh McDaniels is out and Aidan OโConnell is in at quarterback? Evan INgram was the highest scorer of the week with 16.8 points, but Trevor Lawrence only had 14.68 points on his end. Not exactly a formidable stack.
A low-scoring, but close contest. This was the NYJ vs. NYG of this fantasy league. Michaud was able to come out with the saggy W because Austin Ekeler went off on Sunday night for 23.3 points. Also helps that DeVonta Smith had his first 20+ points game since week two, and first 10+ point game since week four. The Eagles dropping a negative three point total didnโt sink Justin either.
Billy, I just hope fantasy basketball goes better for you than fantasy baseball did and fantasy football is. Miles Sanders being projected for nearly 12 points, but then only getting two rush attempts for zero yards in a Panthers win is really a death blow.
After last weekโs close call against Gabe, Bove emerged from his scoring hibernation and got back to proper business. Justin Herbert scored over 20 points for the first time since week four. The double tight end stack of Mark Andrews and Sam LaPorta combined for 33.7 points; there is absolutely no reason to stop that. And Bove had DeAndre Hopkins on the bench.
Sam Howell, quarterback one? What a pickup. And Vaghi may have to rely on Howell because Deshaun Watson may never play football ever again. Sitting down Tyler Lockett made sense because he had never been outstanding. He had only had 20+ points once before this past week. I also love the theory that Cameron Dicker could steal points from Herbert TD passes. The poor play of Puka Nacua and Rhamondre Stevenson sunk Vaghi.
Eric took a chance on two running backs, and both are paying off. Jonathan Taylor and Alvin Kamara combined for 37.7 points. Since coming back Kamara is averaging 22.8 points per game, and he ranks sixth among all running backs. What a find. Josh Allen did set the tone nicely on Thursday with 29.06 points, and even Mike Evans contributed with 12.9 points. Eric put team Sad LPK behind the eight ball right from the start.
Mike can look at his bench and wonder why he didnโt play Javonte Williams, but the man only has two games with double-digit pointsโฆgranted both coming in the past two weeks. Or maybe Logan Thomas and his 16.4 points would have helped? Regardless, none of it would have helped because Eric had his normal outstanding week that remains tough to topple. Even if Mike subbed in his bench players for the rostered players they outscored, he would have lost by about three points.
Timmy Drakeley came forward with his best performance of the season and the best performance of the week just in the knick of time. He did so, losing Kirk Cousins to injury in the process. Timmy now has three players on the IR on his roster. Yet he hasnโt utilized an IR spot. A bold strategy. The secret to TImmyโs success is really no secret. Have CeeDee Lamb on your team when the other team starts Dark Prescott and they each have the best game of their respective seasons.
Greg, I wish I could be talking about a win right now. You played all the right cards, but still lost an all-in bet. Brutal. Perhaps the blame could be placed at the feet of the Houston Texans and their lack of offense against the Panthers. Only one kick from Ka’imi Fairbairn. Also Chris Olave scored just 9.6 points when the New Orleans Saints scored 38 as a team.
Brick. Fucking brutal. 157.06 points is the second highest this week, and yet he suffers the loss this week. Ouch.
157.06 points is the seventh most points scored in a match this entire season. That is out of 96 different point totals.
Timmy had the highest point total this week and his 159.86 points came in handy taking down Brick. I bet Timmy didnโt think heโd have to be sweating anything out with his teamโs effort.
Timmyโs 159.86 point total is the fourth highest scoring output of the entire season.
No new highs or lows set this week from the crew. A little surprising no new benchmarks set during the highest scoring week of the season.
Week eight had the second smallest margin of victory thus far this season. The lowest margin was in week six (18.00 points).
It is rather mind-boggling that Billy has the highest average points from wide receivers in his matchups.
Bove has the highest average ranking in five different statistical categories.
Timmy could not have chosen his lineup better this week: the most points scored and the fewest points on his bench. One wrong move and he would have suffered the loss.
Huntley is currently averaging the most points per matchup at 130.3. Makes sense for him having the most points in the league.
Brick has the lowest average ranking for quarterback points and thatโs it.

WEEK 9 MATCHUPS
There are a couple of questions that both Timmy and I have to address in our matchup. Who is going to play QB for Timmy? Kirk Cousins is done and he doesnโt have another thrower of the football on his roster. I have Jahmyr Gibbs on a bye, and I donโt know where I am going to turn for running back. Cam Akers and Kenneth Gainwell aren’t exactly inspiring options.
Jack picked Will Levis to QB his team this week, and hell it might not be a bad play. The Steelers secondary isnโt great, so as long as he can stay up right then maybe he can get some big yards. And I mentioned in the recaps that Josh McDaniels is gone, which means mandatory good bounce back week for Davante Adams and Jakobi Myers. Michaud will know if his team has a shot before the 1 PM games kick off because the Chiefs face off against the Dolphins in Germany at 9:30 AM ET.
What a week to catch Gabe! Good for Vaghi. Gabe has Christian McCaffrey, Calvin Ridley and the 49ers defense on a bye. If I was a betting man it’s Rashee Rice getting the call up to the starting lineupโฆand after that it is whatever Gabe wants. Vaghi is without Amon-Ra St. Brown, but this may be the best week to go up against Gabe so he has more than a fighting chance.
Huntley, the highest scoring team in the league, against Billy, the second lowest scoring team in the league. On paper, this one is a massive mismatch. But we gotta see how the games play out. Daniel Jones is rumored to be back and Jordan Love can be benched for a potentially more lucrative scorer. And how about we get Nico Collins back on his high-flying early season streak.
As of when I am typing this, Eric is projected to beat Bove by 24 points. That is absolutely nutty. Is it more nuts than me watching a Rick Springfield concert movie that I rented because it was directed by David Fincher? Maybe not. The tight end stack has to take a break this week for Bove, but Eric has his full complement of weapons. I still canโt believe Adam Thielen is the eighth best fantasy wide receiver this season.
Brickโs team is hurting this week. After going 15 rounds last week and coming out with a loss, now the manager has to pick his team up without the likes of Travis Etienne Jr and George Kittle. Kenney can either start his Sunday with Tua at 9:30 AM, or end it with Burrow in primetime. How crazy is it that they put the Bengals and Bills games on Sunday night. Seems a little morbid to make it a focal point mainly because of someone almost dying. However, I will be watching.
TEAMS ON A BYE: Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers
STANDINGS
I slide down to fourth place following the loss to Huntley and Eric works his way up to third place.
Huntley moves up to fifth place and now owns a tiebreaker between Greg Brick, at least for now.
KC Rough Housers moves up two spots from tenth to eighth place following his dramatic victory.
Billy finds himself in the cellar again and the Charlestown Chiefs made the biggest move of the week hopping up from 12th to ninth,
