This second trailer for Ferrari (2023) shines a much brighter light on the plot of the film. Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) is in trouble, and is seemingly having an identity crisis while also trying to save the family business from falling into irrelevant bankruptcy. It is explicitly stated that Enzo and the Ferrari company must win the Mille Miglia in order to stay both relevant and in business.
The majority of the spoken dialogue in this preview appears to come from one specific speech. Enzo is holding court at a table, seemingly speaking to a potential driver for his car in the Mille Miglia. There are a few key lines spoken by the desperate hand-talker, but none more-so than the following:
“Two Objects Cannot Occupy The Same Point In Space at the same moment in time.”
Hmm, what exactly are we talking about here? Sure, one could look at Enzo’s words at a surface level and see he is talking about racing cars. However, the trailer tells you to look deeper.
Shailene Woodley has a lot more screen time in this preview, and that is no accident. Enzo is speaking a bit about himself when he talks about “Two Objects Cannot Occupy The Same Point In Space At The Same Moment…” Lina Lardi is the mistress of Enzo and the mother of Enzo’s only son. Imagine how Laura has to feel about that, especially with her money being the last life jacket for her husband and the Ferrari company?
There is also the following line that caught me ear:
“This is a gun pointed at our head”
Well, Mr. Ferrari, isn’t your wife pointing a gun at you at some point in this trailer? Again. Self referential in this speech. It’ll be truly fascinating to see when this dining room table speech takes place in the movie. Is it going to be a foreshadowing of things to come, or is it going to act as some sort of epilogue to a tumultuous period in his life?
This love triangle makes the part of Laura Ferrari remarkably intriguing. Lots of the buzz coming out of Ferrari is that Penélope Cruz stands tall among the rest. She must have been chomping at the bit to take this part. She is not just the arm dressing for the movie’s main character. The character of Laura has to balance her marriage, her financial leverage over her husband, and knowing that Enzo is cheating on her. Based on the gun being pointed at Enzo’s face, I think it is safe to say that Laura doesn’t take it too well.
Dear Mr. Mann. Please, have this movie be good. This is your first movie since Blackhat in 2015. Eight years is a long time. Let that time pay off.
If I had to guess, I think that Ferrari will be a good movie with some great technical aspects. This particular film does not as much of a popcorn flick feel as Ford v Ferrari (2019), but the exhilarating racing and bombastic sound should be enough to get consideration for some Academy Awards. Adam Driver is great at campaigning and Cruz is no stranger to the Academy Awards. She has been nominated four times and won in 2007 for Best Supporting Actress in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2009).
(I admit, I have never heard of Vicky Cristina Barcelona.)
Ferrari opens its doors for audiences Christmas Day, 2023.

There is a lot happening in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. One could argue that there is too much going on.
Much maligned as the worst of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible II doesn’t do itself any favors upon rewatch.
