This is how I imagine the pitch for Anyone But You (2023) went like.

“We need to make a romantic comedy.”

“Agreed.”

“It should include two of the most attractive people on the planet.”

“Ambitious, but I like it.”

“What do you think of Sydney Sweeney?”

“Love it.”

“And Glen Powell.”

“From Top Gun: Maverick, I love that movie.”

“Yes, from Maverick. But, there is one more thing.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s going to be rated R.”

*Starts making Johnny Manziel money signals with their hands.*

The tried & true romantic comedy formula of putting two incredibly attractive people in the movie and letting them ooze sexual chemistry has its latest installment. Anyone But You puts two three lettered main characters, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell), into the ring of romance. Both lovebirds are beautiful stubborn people who don’t want to admit that their bickering for one another acts as a veil for eventual undying fealty. Anyone But You will take these pair of city dwellers and drop into a romantic paradise where the mask of hardheadedness is washed away with a cleanse of allurement.

Alright, let’s break down this trailer.

  • Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are fucking gorgeous. I am putting myself at a 10 on the bonk meter. Just have to acknowledge it.
  • The trailer is very short and (to be frank) very poorly edited. It doesn’t matter. This trailer gave the people what they wanted. They got Sweeney looking like a goddess and they got Powell showing off his abs and displaying the magnetic “V”.
  • The moment in the trailer of Bea being swung into Ben’s arms on the boat during a dance sequence made me feel tingly inside.

Anyone But You is directed by Will Gluck. This man has a special place in my heart because he directed the comedic classic, Fired Up! (2009). That’s right, I said it.

A little story with Fired Up!. I went to see this in high school with some friends. There was like a group of 10 of us, and only one of the crew could not be convinced to watch the horror film, The Uninvited (2009). I haven’t seen The Uninvited since being turned down this random February/March time, but I am so glad that I saw Fired Up!. I used the phrase “ You gotta risk it to get the biscuit.” more often than I can possibly count. It is in my permanent lexicon.

Will Anyone But You have any one-liners that’ll stick with me for the rest of my life? Probably not.

But will Anyone But You have my attention when it is released in theaters on December 15, 2023? Yes. The answer is yes.
