The Real Reason For Sundays Fantasy Football Week 5 Recap
PREAMBLE
Apologies in advance if this recap has more typos or if it is skimpier than normal. I am traveling for work today so I am losing out on my normal train commute writing time.
Look at week five, the theme of the day has to be blowouts. Unfortunately there were more than a handful of absolute thrashings this week. There are a confluence of reasons for this happening, but it is hard to ignore.
We should also point out the injury bug that will affect multiple teams in the league. James Connor suffered a knee injury and is going on the IR for the Cardinals. Same thing happened to Miamiโs DeโVon Achane. Justin Jefferson is sending Minnesota reeling with a hamstring issue. Anthony Richardson got hit hard and sprained his AC Joint, and Daniel Jones may have a major neck injury. Travis Kelce also suffered a low ankle sprain and was hobbled in KCโs win. All substantial fantasy players, many of whom are now out for at least four weeks.
We are now five weeks into the season, and it is kinda scary to think we are quickly approaching the halfway point of the regular season. But we wonโt dwell on that.
Let’s get after it.
WEEK 5 SCOREBOARD
I consider myself lucky to have picked up the win against list. I had Anthony Richardson get hurt which is never ideal, but his lack of numbers was countered by Aaron Jones not playing on Monday night and James Connor getting hurt. The craziest part of my box score is George Pickers somehow scoring 26.6 points in a truly ugly low scoring game.
Zack Moss sitting on Jackโs bench might haunt him a little. Understandable with Jonathan Taylor being reactivated, but Moss still carried the heavy load. The New Orleans defense scored 22.0 points going up against the feeble Patriots, and I donโt think Jack would have guessed his highest scorer this week would be them.
Bove remains unblemished, however he can admit that he got a bit lucky this week. Brock Purdy was more than just a suitable replacement for Justin Herbert, and DeAndre Hopkins had his best game as a Titan as well. Otherwise there arenโt any standout members in his starting lineup.
Kenney decided itโd be a good time to sit the Bengals, and that really bit him in the ass. Joe Burrow had roughly seven more points that Tua Tagovailoa (fucking hate spelling his name). But more sad for Kenney is the Bengals defense on his bench with 17 points while the Patriots defense that was started netted just one point.
One of the aforementioned blowouts. Billyโs bet on Jordan Love is not paying off yet, and season-low outputs from Miles Sanders and Justin Jefferson didnโt help the cause. Now Billy has to deal with Jefferson being placed on the IR. If I recall correctly, Diontae Johnson comes back for Pittsburgh this week.
Brick had three outstanding performances from three skill positions. Travis Etienne Jr. scored 37.4 points in London to start things off well. Then Tyreek Hill sped to 32.1 points against the New York Giants. Brickโs Cowboys didnโt win on Sunday night, but some solace can be found that it was George Kittle who buried them with three catchesโฆall of which were for touchdowns.
Second blowout of the week. Gabe improves to 5-0 with a searing victory over Timmy. Gabe had to think he was all set for success after Thursday when DJ Moore had the best wideout effort by anyone thus far this season. 50 points is a nice head start. Gabeโs iffy QB situation of C.J. Stroud and Kenny Pickett didnโt affect him at all this week. Also, it is nuts that the 49ers beat the Cowboys so bad and Christian McCaffrey only had 13.8 fantasy points.
Two double-digit scorers for Timmy in week five. Kirk Cousins did his thing in a Minnesota loss. Hopefully his numbers donโt dip too much with Justin Jefferson being gone. Cole Kmet scored 15.2 points to be his second leading scorer. Timmy should be able to bounce back because he will have Keenan Allen and Quentin JOhnston (the entire Chargers WR Corp) coming back.
A third straight blowout to touch on. This time around it is Eric defeating Michaud. Eric had three players score 20+ points while Michaud had just one. Josh Allen, Adam Thielen and Travis Kelce carried the banner for Eric. How about Thielen just leeding the way for the Panthers; he has 100+ yards twice this second and in both of those games he had 13+ targets and a touchdown.
Michaudโs roster begins with Patrick Mahomes scoring 19.24 points and immediately below him there is David Montgomery with 21.9 points. After that, many of his players didnโt step up. DeVonta Smith had just 1.6 points. Dameon Pierce was below double-digits again for the third time this season. This may have been a schedule loss for Mcihaud, for he is hoping that Austin Ekeler comes back from injury in week six and Chris Goodwin is another option for points.
Andrew Huntley needed a win and he absolutely got it. Remember when I said that DJ Moore had the best week of any WR this year? Well, that was a few matchups ago. JaโMarr Chase would like a word. 52.2 points. He is indeed always open. Jalen Hurts and Breece Hall also had monster games. All in all, great team effort for Huntley. Everyone chipped in and it could have been even better if the Cowboys had just an average week on defense. Also Huntley had Kenneth Walker III on a byeโฆso it could have been ever crazier.
Vaghi did the best he could with five players, and at least one starter on a bye. It is the running backs that are killing Matt. 5.8 combined points from Rhamondre Stevenson and Matt Brieda. Outchy mama.
These previews are going to be short its late in chicago. My apologies.
Billy really needs a win. I donโt want to give it to him. The odds are in my favor, but the Eagles are playing the New York Jets which means A.J. Brown and DโAndre Swift are in for a tough day. Billy has three players listed as questionable right now, including Daniel Jones who is currently the only QB on his team with a game.
No James Connor means that Jack is rolling with Emari Demarcado in his lineup. That is a name. Bove is hoping that Mostert gets back into the primary running back role with Achane. Can the stack of Trevor Lawrence and Evan Engram help List hand Tim his first loss? Or will Bove playing Garrett Wilson while also playing the Eagles defense lead to some weird point shaving?
First place Gabe is going up against near last place Michael Kenney. Luckily for Gabe he has the top RB in the league and Kenney just lost Achane , who is maybe the most exciting player in the league. The paper leans towards the favoriteโฆheavilyโฆbut you have to play the games.
Greg Brick is coming off a very strong week, and this week he may be able to return to Dak Prescott because I see a shoot out between the Cowboys and the Chargers. Also, I am not typing this out after my clocks have all adjusted to central time and I am so thrown off by a 3:25 start. Michaud hopes to have Ekeler back and Patrick Mahomes may score 10000 points against the Denver defense.
Vaghi is in need of a win, and he deserves on too. We have to quarterbacks going up against one another: Kirk Cousins and Justin Fields. But it is all going to come down to Monday night when Timmy has Tony Pollard and CeeDee Lamb going. Stress to begin the work week for Timmy.
This is an exciting matchup. Eric has showed a great ceiling, but Andrew Huntley is the highest scoring danger in the league. Will he be able to rely on Jalen Hurt scoring well against the New York Jets defense? Will Eric have both Travis Kelce and Tee Higgins avaliable? This I think is going to be the most competative matchup of the week.
TEAMS ON A BYE: Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers
STANDINGS
The top three remain the same from last week: Bove in first, Gabe in second and Huntley sits in the bronze position.
Stanko climbs into the fourth slot having won three straight.
Eric moved up from eight place to fifth place.
Jack moves down one spot to sixth place.
Greg Brick with a monster jump from 12th to seventh.
Timmy falls from fourth to eighth.
Michaud drops two sports from seventh to ninth.
Vaghi is now in 10th, Kenney falls to 11th and Billy finds himself in the bottom of the basement.
Huntley is in third place overall, but has the most points in the league.
Vaghi has the fourth most points in the leagueโฆbut sits in 10th place. That is brutal. He has the most points scored against him.
Gabe is in the best of both worlds: he has the third most points and least amount of points against.
