“If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win.”
There are very few words spoken in the Ferrari (2023) trailer, and that is perfectly. Let the revving of engines and the depth of Penélope Cruz’s eyes do all the talking.
Ferrari is the newest movie from the four-time Oscar nominee Micahel Mann. The man who brought us the games like Heat (1995) and The Last Of The Mohicans (1992) is looking for his first universally praised movie since Collateral (2004). Mann’s first movie since 2015’s Blackhat (2015) is what appears to be a less popcorn version of Ford v. Ferrari (2019). We are getting the origin story of America’s enemy in Mangold’s tale. We are going to learn how Ferrari became Ferrari.
Adam Driver plays the part of Enzo Ferrari, a retired driver turned entrepreneur and business juggernaut. The two-time Oscar nominee dons the appropriate accent and stars sternly into the camera while the engines are roaring in the background. We see Ferrari as the family man, the husband, the negotiator, the driver and the deal broker.
While Driver has the titular character, it would appear like the script puts his wife Laura Ferrari (Penélope Cruz) in the driver’s seat more than a handful of times. Perhaps Enzo is the perfect machine to change the racing world forever, but he needs someone to coordinate the shifting of gears when appropriate. You need someone who understands the potential of the machine underneath the head. It is the tried and true; “behind every great man is a great woman”
Ferrari takes place during the most tumultuous time of the Farrari’s life. It is the summer of 1957 and Enzo is the forward facing owner of a company veering on bankruptcy. Based on the logline, Enzo and Laura are working through a tough time that includes dealing with the loss of a son. With their backs up against the walls emotionally and fiscally, Enzo has decided to empty his gas tank on the treacherous 1,000-mile Mille Miglia. It’s a double-down, and the bottom of the well doesn’t have a ladder to climb back up.
While the plot of the Ferrari needs to have the character stakes, we can all acknowledge that we are most excited for the racing scenes. We want to see the carnage and feel the wind against our face. We want to see the different environments of the 1,000-mile race.
Ferrari releases into theaters on Christmas Day.

There is a lot happening in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. One could argue that there is too much going on.
Much maligned as the worst of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible II doesn’t do itself any favors upon rewatch.
