This is just your public service announcement that the fourth installment of The Expendables franchise comes out tomorrow in theaters across the country. In case you haven’t seen any of the ads for it that have bombarded cable channels and YouTube pre rolls for the past couple weeks, above is the official red band trailer.
The Expend4bles (2023) has the staple foursome of Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Sylvester Stallone. This quartet has been in every Expendable adventure, and this time around they are going to be joined by the talents of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia.
This trailer is fucking outragous in the best way possible. It is campy as all hell, and has the tried-and-true death sentence of using people’s tweets about the movie to promote it. Think about it. When was the last time you saw a commercial or trailer with Internet comments that was actually good? Honestly, the last one that comes to mind for me was something like Paranormal Activity (2009).
Listen, the trailer is ridiculous, we understand that, but it does raise the important truth that The Expend4bles is rated R. That is essential.to everyone’s enjoyment level. The Expendables 3 (2014) is a major let down from the first two movies of this franchise. And to be clear, I am ont expecting anything close to John Wick quality. The first Expendables set the bar for its production value and made sure to tell the audience it cares more about the vibe than it does the cinematic execution. The Expend4bles looks to get back to this target, and the trailer punches you in the face with this mission.
The second half of this particular The Expend4bles trailer does its best to simplify the movie even more. Oh, you don’t know who these actors are? Let us run down the cast like a Mortal Kombat video game side scrolling character choice menu. I don’t hate it. Again, embrace the vibe. Embrace the goofiness. Embrace what the niche audience wants to know.
Also, it never hurts to have Megan Fox in lingerie at the end of your trailer. And the quick cut to Jason Statham smiling while cutting down enemies with a big gun is the perfect mood capture. If you could rig the mood ring of The Expend4bles viewers, set it to the Statham smile. That is the giggle-inducing behavior we fans of action want to have.
Again, The Expend4bles comes out in theaters tomorrow. It probably won’t make a lot of money, but that’s okay. It is built for streaming when it eventually happens. But I really want to see it in theaters if I have the time.

There is a lot happening in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. One could argue that there is too much going on.
Much maligned as the worst of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible II doesn’t do itself any favors upon rewatch.
