IMDB

Saoirse Ronan is not only one of my favorite actresses working, she is also one of the best. In Foe (2023) she is working with Paul Mescal, who I must get more acquainted with seeing how is going to be the lead in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 (2024). Between the two of them there are five Oscar nominations, but no wins.

Foe also stars Aaron Pierre in a fairly large role. My only relation to his work is M. Night Shaymalan’s Old (2022) where he played a character called Mid-Sized Seadan. His part In Foe seems to be more priestly; he is dispensing wisdom and an opportunity to rise above a mundane life.

Garth Davis is directing Foe, and this is his first big movie since Lion in 2016. I have not seen Lion, but the movie was nominated for six Academy Awards. Is it bad thT I have never even heard of it? It stars Oscar-nominated Dev Patel, and Nicole Kidman, alongside Rooney Mara. It was also nominated for Best Motion Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.

I really have to check out Lion. Greg Fraser is the one who was nominated for Cinematography. This was before he won for Dune (2022) and before he made the best looking superhero movie since Logan (2017) with The Batman (2022).

Shame on me. Garth Davis and Lion deserve my attention.

Any who, Foe is based on a book written by Iain Reid, who is the same author of I’m Thinking Of Ending Things which was made into a Charlie Kaufman Netflix movie in 2020. I was not the biggest fan of I’m Thinking Of Ending Things because it confused the hell out of me. There are lots of moving pieces and timelines, all of which paint the hue of Jake and the Young Woman’s relationship in a different light.

Foe is Reid’s second book, and the movie rights were secured before the book was even released. He seems to be an incredibly hot ticket.

Based on this trailer of Foe, I think it is safe to say that all angles of Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal) are going to be explored. Their relationship is a simple version of a partnership on a farm living the classic old-school American dream. When Terrance (Aaron Pierre) arrives it messes up their facade of a normal life.

Foe gives off the impression of being very grounded with the backdrop of science fiction behind it. The timeframe of the movie is not going to be its defining aspect, though it will play a part in setting the environmental context for Junior’s decision. Foe looks have many layers, though where a story written by Reid goes is anyone’s guess.

Foe releases into select theaters on October 6. On that same day, Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023) will also be released into select theaters.
