INJECT THIS INTO MY VEINS!!!

The last time Bradley Cooper took a seat in the directing chair we got A Star Is Born (2018), which is one of my favorite movies over the last five years. Cooper gave us a complex relationship featuring a flawed musician fading into the limelight alongside a young woman whose star is on the rise.

Maestro (2023) is staying in the musical realm, but changing the dynamic of the relationship. Cooper isn’t going to be playing the overshadowed former star. Instead, Cooper is going to be playing renowned musical talent Leonard Bernstein as he becomes one of the most iconic conductors of all time. The lens through which we will view many of Leonard’s actions is his wife Felecia, who will be played by two-time Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan.

We are going to see both bookends of the Bernstein’s relationship, which is put to us visually in the trailer with the number guessing games both at a young and old age. It should be noted that we see their relationship in both black & white, and in color. Are we getting two timelines like Oppenheimer (2023)? I doubt it. I think we are going to get some sort of moment in the movie where something inspires Leonard and helps him see the world in a new light. My second guess is that this is not with Felecia, which may be a reason for their sidewinding journey.

We first see color in this trailer after a grand opening of concert room doors, and then we immediately get a shot of Felicia looking at someone who is in charge of the room. We can presume that is Leonard. She sees him in all different shades, in both bright and dark times.

This movie is going to be an intersting change of pace for the newest conductor based movie Tár (2022). In Cate Blachett’s Oscar worthy performance, we saw her character’s true manipulative nature operate secretly like a cloud of subconscious control twisting puppet strings. In Mysterio, there is not going to be such manipulative slyness. One could bet their bottom dollar that we are going to examine more depths of empathy. Tears will be shed.

The story of Maestro seems timeless, but the color pallet seems like it is from a different time. Cooper is painting his relationship with Felecia with what seems like antique oil pants. The definition seems lessened, but the springy colors help define the shots and color areas of focus with a pay attention to me vignette.

Cooper supposedly beat out Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorecese to direct this movie. Expectations are incredibly high, and it is rather remarkable that many are confident Maestro will be outstanding being that this is only Cooper’s second ever directing job.

Maestro releases in selected theaters around Christmas on December 20, 2023. It will also be released on Netflix.

Also if you want a HILARIOUS laugh, there was an attempt to bring down Maestro before it’s even off the ground. It was squashed in the best way possible. Sometimes culture can be fucking crazy.
